VITA Tax Preparer, Advanced - Part-time Jan. 29, 2024- May 17, 2024
The VITA Tax Program Quality Reviewer is a seasonal role where one must provide quality tax return preparation for eligible taxpayers. Using the information provided by the client, and by asking follow-up questions, tax preparers must input the client’s information into the designated (TaxSlayer) software application. The VITA Tax Program is a two step process. Quality Reviewers perform the vital second step of ensuring that the tax return is complete and accurate prior to submission to the taxing authorities. To establish and ensure the greatest degree of trust, Tax Preparers are responsible for preparing accurate tax returns and must uphold the highest ethical standards. These standards are described in the Volunteer Standards of Conduct Agreement.
Key Responsibilities
Review the identification of all parties appearing on the tax return for authenticity. Ensure that the documentation meets the standards set by the VITA Program.
Review the tax documents provided by the client ensuring authenticity and completeness.
Review the VITA Intake/Interview Form 13614-C with the client to ensure that all questions are answered with a Yes or No Answer. No question should be left Blank or listed as unsure. Determine that the tax return is in scope for the Tax Site.
Interview each client to determine that all income is reported and all allowable deductions are claimed.
Prepare only those returns for which training and certification were provided.
Review tax returns prepared by other staff for accuracy and completeness.
Review the processed return with the client, explaining the Refund/Amount Due
Refer clients requiring adjustments to the Federal or State withholdings to the Tax Site Coordinator
Secure client signatures on all required documents
Successfully learn the designated (TaxSlayer) software application to prepare returns.
Maintain the confidentiality of all client information.
Complete all administrative activities related to the completion of the client’s return.
What you bring to the role
High school diploma or equivalent
Must pass the following IRS VITA Certifications through Link and Learn before accepting the position:
Volunteer Standards of Conduct - Ethics training
Intake/Interview and Quality Review
Advanced Tax Preparation.
Military, International and Foreign Student is a plus
One year of accounting experience preferred.
Candidates should have at least 3 years experience in the tax preparation field and strong knowledge of personal income taxes as well as tax law knowledge.
Candidates should have at least 2 years Certification at the Advanced Level in the VITA/TCE Program
Strong communication and organizational skills.
Good attention to details with excellent follow up skills.
Bilingual (Spanish) is a plus.
