Mission:

The Mission of the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences is to provide medical examiner and crime laboratory services of the highest quality in an unbiased manner with uncompromised integrity.

Vision:

To provide consistent, quality death investigation and laboratory analysis for the benefit of the entire community.

To create a technological strongpoint for legal agencies to facilitate justice in criminal and civil proceedings.

To establish an academic environment for training in the field of Forensic Science.

Brief Quality Assurance Project Coordinator Overview:

The Quality Assurance Project Coordinator monitors Quality Assurance and quality control activities in designated Department Divisions and assists with preparing for accreditations and certifications by ensuring all staff and operational activities are in compliance with applicable standards and requirements.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Conducts internal audits throughout the year under the direction of a lead auditor.

  • Participates in nonconformance investigations and generates corrective action reports; drafts, implements, and tracks corrective and preventive actions.

  • Administers internal and external proficiency tests.

  • Assists in maintaining the Department's document management and control system (Q-Pulse).

  • Reviews and formats procedures and manuals in Q-Pulse.

  • Evaluates processes for efficiency and develops improvement initiatives.

  • Participates in other quality improvement projects as needed.

  • Reviews internal scientific validations of new methods or method modifications.

  • Assists with information and records disclosures for discovery orders and subpoenas.

  • Monitors calibration and preventative maintenance of scientific lab equipment/instruments.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Forensic Science, Quality Management, Chemistry, Biology, or related field

Experience:

  • One year experience of Quality Assurance in an accredited forensic laboratory

Licensure:

  • A valid Texas Driver's License and ability to safely operate a motor vehicle

Other Requirements:

  • Must pass criminal background check and drug / alcohol screening (prior to and randomly after employment)

  • Must provide a personal DNA sample to be maintained by the Department's Forensic Genetics Laboratory for Quality Assurance purposes

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Familiarity with laboratory accreditation programs and applicable ISO standards

  • Experience in an organization with a formal quality management system

  • Objective, with a high degree of independent judgment and problem-solving ability

  • Basic statistical skills and ability to conduct root cause analysis

  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, and ability to multi-task and adjust priorities as needed

Position Type, and Typical Hours of Work:

  • Full time; 40 hours per week

  • Monday - Friday

  • Weekends and evening shifts may be necessary

Work Environment:

  • Office / laboratory setting

  • Possible exposure to dangerous chemicals, unpleasant odors and/or loud noises

Physical Demands:

  • Medium work

  • Requires physical strength to lift and handle large and heavy items of physical evidence, chemical supplies, and laboratory equipment weighing up to forty (40) pounds occasionally in the performance of duties

  • Must be physically able to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Bending and climbing ladders may be necessary

  • Reports to: Quality Assurance and Improvement Manager


Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
