Quality Assurance Instructional Designer
Remote- anywhere in US
Part-time: 20 hours a week
Pay rate: $50-$60/hour (weekly pay!)
Temporary assignment: 6-months with potential for extension
The Short Courses QA Instructional Designer role is a 6-month assignment, U.S.-based remote position focused on providing instructional design support and Quality Assurance reviews for the authors (Subject Matter Experts) producing Coursera’s Short Courses. Short Courses are courses that span 30 minutes to 3 hours. These courses utilize videos, readings, and hands-on practice activities to teach specific concepts and skills. The goal of this role is to support instructors in maximizing the effectiveness of such learning experiences. Unlike many traditional Instructional Designer roles, in this role, you will not be asked to create learning artifacts using tools (Captivate, Articulate, Powerpoint, etc). This position focuses on content reviews and Quality Assurance (QA), content optimization, and interfacing with SMEs to help design their projects to deliver the best learning experience possible.
Role:
Coursera is looking for an Instructional Designer to review our Short Courses and provide actionable feedback to our subject matter experts. This includes reviewing course outlines, scripts, and video recordings. We are looking for Instructional Designers experienced in QA for online teaching content as well as the process of developing quality learning videos. Some example questions to answer in the QA include:
- Are instructional materials and assessments tightly aligned with learning objectives?
- Are there enough scaffolding materials to support learner success?
- Are teaching videos engaging and focused?
- Do the on-screen visuals adequately support the learning experience?
- Are assessments adequately rigorous?
- Does the learning experience comply with the length/duration guidelines?
Responsibilities:
- Review and evaluate scripts and video recordings based on internal rubrics/checklists provided by Coursera;
- Provide detailed and actionable content improvement suggestions for each course. Suggestions should cover, but are not limited to:
- Instructional design effectiveness
- Content structure and flow
- Effective use of visuals
- Instructor engagement
- Assessments quality
- Complete review and suggestions within three (3) hours for short-form content Projects (under five (5) hours of learning time) and submit the suggestions within two (2) business days;
- Use Coursera’s rubrics, checklists, and training materials to ensure pedagogical best practices are incorporated into the content improvement suggestions;
- Revise content improvement suggestions based on Coursera’s feedback within two (2) business days;
- Escalate to Coursera critical content issues that are not covered by the rubrics.
- Communicate feedback appropriately to subject matter experts by using prioritization methods that help them focus their development on the most impactful content changes;
- Interface with the Short Courses team on a cadence determined by Coursera to discuss updates, short-term and long-term process improvements, and areas of concern;
- Support the creation of scalable resources, articles, and training materials for instructors based on emergent trends in Short Courses.
Basic Qualifications:
- 5+ years of professional experience in instructional design for online education;
- Professional experience leveraging data to improve eLearning performance;
- Creative problem-solving abilities, excellent written and verbal communication, and strong interpersonal and operational skills;
- Strong bias for action and ability to initiate, coordinate, and manage numerous projects and schedules simultaneously in a fast-paced, dynamic, and cross-functional environment.
- Strong analytical skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Subject matter expertise or content domain expertise in computer science, data science, technology, or engineering;
- Experience designing and developing content for industry education/workforce skills development preferred;
- Advanced degree in education, instructional design, or learning science preferred;
- Experience working as a remote employee. [NOTE: Covid-incurred remote experience satisfies requirement]
