Description
The City is seeking interested candidates for the Maintenance Tech 1 position with the Public Works Wastewater Department. This position offers room for growth and training towards "Operator in Training".
Reports to: WWTP Manager or designee
Under direct supervision, performs a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled, limited skilled and manual work in the maintenance and operation of sewer system, buildings, grounds, facilities, streetscape, landscape, and related duties as required, and occasionally other duties as assigned.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Conducts general grounds maintenance. Activities include trash removal, sweeping, and other needs as they arrive. Coordinating repairs as necessary.
- Mows and maintains areas related to sewer operations; adjacent roadway / right of way landscape areas or streetscape areas, cleans and maintains grounds. May plant grass, trees, shrubs, and flowers.
- Performs minor semi-skilled interior building maintenance such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, and other unskilled and semi-skilled trades work.
- Performs routine maintenance on lawn and power equipment.
- Inspects, washes, and performs routine maintenance of sewer buildings and assets. Sweeps, washes, paints, and repairs or replaces building components.
- Operates maintains and repairs components at sewer lift stations and the wastewater treatment plant property; repairs /replaces gauges, pumps, sensors, filters, controls and other equipment to assure treatment plant operates as required.
- Collection system and wastewater site maintenance, spraying/hosing down areas and equipment, cleaning, and other site related cleaning duties.
- Operates, maintains and provides routine preventative maintenance of sewage pump stations; cleans wet wells and operates pumps and valves as necessary; transmission mains; and treatment plant system.
- Carries out the seeding, weeding, fertilizing, soil conditioning, watering, and the pest and weed control of the City's sewer facilities. Maintains and adjusts specialized equipment and tools, including electric motors, pumps, sprinklers, tractors, mowers, and irrigation systems.
- Operates tractors, mowers, jack hammers, steam cleaners, buffers, washers, and other listed equipment as needed.
- Collects and disposes of solid waste from buildings and grounds; picks up litter from premises. Opens and closes, locks and unlocks facilities as needed.
- Maintains current skills and knowledge in the proper and safe techniques of building and grounds maintenance functions.
- Assists in the construction or repairs of sewer facilities, including clearing, grading, drainage, and foundation work. Facilitates system repairs by contractors utilizing specialized equipment such as tanker or vactor trucks for cleaning wet wells and pipe systems.
- Participates in snow/ice removal for sewer facilities, building access as well as sidewalks, and other areas as necessary.
- Keeps records of work completed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Desired Minimum Qualifications
- HS Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Washington Driver's License.
- Clean driving record.

- Work is performed daily both in and outdoors under all weather conditions and includes exposure to inclement weather, noise, equipment and vibrations, airborne materials, active construction sites, and traffic.
- May require dealing with persons who are hostile or aggressive, posing threatening conditions.
- Be available for stand-by duty as assigned.
- Working towards Operator in Training (OIT) certification is generally supported for professional growth.
