Summary:

Public Safety Specialists promote security of our grounds while working to protect the integrity of our therapeutic environment through monitoring facility grounds to include activities of staff, clients served, public/guests, and the neighboring areas. Public Safety Specialists aim to detect and prevent potentially unsafe activities and enforce all laws and organization rules and regulations, preserving the peace, protecting life and property within their span of control.

Monitors the safety of staff, clients, and the public on our campus through patrol activity on campus and within buildings, monitoring visitor access to buildings, conducting foot patrols, responding to service calls and alarms and reports of suspicious activity. Alerts Rescue, Police and Fire departments as deemed necessary for situations that require a higher level of intervention or enforcement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Performs Patrol Activity and Incident response as follows...

  1. Makes frequent patrols, by foot and vehicle, of designated areas to watch for unusual or suspicious activities and hazardous situations, reporting issues to supervisor and or First Responders.
  2. Takes positive action on complaints/calls for assistance received from staff, visitors, and others, providing excellent customer service.
  3. Responds to a variety of incidents including, but not limited to medical emergencies, verbal or physical altercations, assaults, accidents, fire alarms, vehicle incidents, etc.
  4. Detains persons of need/offenders until First Responders are on scene. May be required to testify in court.
  5. If incidents occur, write incident accident/illness reports and determine transport needs of patient for treatment.
  6. Notifies First Responders for assistance if conditions are serious or life-threatening and assists on all incidents on grounds.
  7. Coordinate with clinicians regarding identification of clients whose behaviors appear to be counterproductive or relapse oriented.
  8. Monitors facility entrances and controls access to unauthorized areas.
  9. Observes/screens all visitors/persons entering the premises, monitoring for abnormal activity, and questioning suspicious persons. Checks, locks, and opens buildings, and ensures exits are used appropriately. Checks office areas for suspicious activities.
  10. Engage clients and support them while providing safety supervision.
  11. Be a mental health first responder to all clients on campus.
  12. Be a resource to clients for their recovery.
  13. Role model appropriate behavior on all campuses of SEIC.
  14. Assure the safety of all clients and visitors through constant observation, supervision, situational awareness, and adherence to all safety policies of SEIC.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not oversee staff.

Qualifications:

Education/Experience

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent;
  • Minimum of 1 year of security-related experience or an Associate's (2 years) degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
  • Certified Peer Support Specialist credential preferred or willing to achieve in first 3 months of hire.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Ability to problem solve;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer applications;
  • Must be able to pass a drug screen to be hired;
  • Must be able to react and work calmly under pressure;
  • Must be able to pass background checks;

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Must have a valid driver's license and meet the eligibility requirements per the Company Vehicle, Driver, and Travel Safety Policy;

Work Environment:

Positive working relationships in the community are an important part of the environment, as you can expect to frequently work with law enforcement, other emergency departments and Clinicians/Supervisors.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

  • Must be in good physical condition without any restriction in the ability to walk, run, stand, sit, or climb multiple flights of stairs;
  • Must be able to drive a vehicle for extended amounts of time without interruption (intervals up to 3-4 hours);
  • Regularly required to use hands to handle or feel; talk; see; and/or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to lift a minimum of 25 pounds.
