Position Description: Position Overview: This employee is responsible for carrying out the School Health Program following the VNHS program guidelines and in accordance with the recommended state school health policies and procedures. The nurse implements the School Health Program in the assigned schools in collaboration with the school administrator and School Nurse Coordinator. Understands and commits to the agency mission. Performs all duties and responsibilities listed herein, as well as other duties that may be assigned.Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Performs related duties as assigned by supervisor. Complies with all federal, state and local laws and regulations as appropriate for the position. Complies with all policies and procedures of the agency, including those specified in the employee handbook. Meets all documentation and productivity standards as identified by the agency. Functions independently with minimal supervision. Maintains client confidentiality. Confers with the administrator of each assigned school in the planning, implementing and evaluating of the health program. Evaluates school health policies/practices and provides guidance re: first aid/CPR and illness care, medication administration and blood borne pathogen compliance with direction from the School Nurse Coordinator. Identifies students with special health needs in the educational setting and develops emergency action plans, when necessary to address emergency needs. Serves as a member of the multi-disciplinary team for students with special health needs when requested. Provides training and education for school personnel related to recognition of illness, first aid and emergency care, infection and blood-borne pathogen exposure control and other health related issues. Provides Medication Aide and First Responder training for identified school personnel. Provides orientation and direction to paraprofessionals and volunteers assisting with screenings and other health related activities. Provides treatment requiring the expertise of the nurse for injured and ill students. Maintains individual permanent student health records, documenting all pertinent health information including immunizations and results of health screenings. Maintains a preventive school health program through review and update of immunization records, early identification and control of communicable conditions, and promotion of a safe and healthy school environment. Plans/manages the required health screening programs and performs rescreens of abnormal screenings, nursing assessments and intervention to include the necessary referral and follow-up in writing, by phone or per home visit. Prepares reports as required to include immunization summaries, statistical reports and evaluations. Serves as health liaison from the school to home, to health care providers and to community resources. Provides counseling, guidance and teaching to students, school personnel, and parents regarding health concerns. Serves as a consultant to the classroom teacher and guest lecturer related to health education. Contributes to employee satisfaction through positive interactions and professionalism. Promotes the growth of the VNA by representing the organization, its mission, and its role in the community in a professional manner.Education and/or Work Experience Requirements: Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing, BSN degree preferred. Active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Nebraska or other nurse licensure compact state. Certified in Basic Life Support. One year experience and knowledge in the principles and practices of maternal child or community health nursing preferred. Knowledge of community resources. Adapts to changes in procedures and technology. Willingly learns new skills as required for the position Must maintain current drivers license and auto insurance coverage within the limits specified by VNAs liability insurance carrier and stated in the VNA employee handbook. Must provide proof of license and insurance upon request and have access to reliable transportation. Must maintain an acceptable driving record as set forth in VNAs policies and procedures. Understands legal and ethical obligations for maintaining professional competency. Participates in professional development activities. Integrates standards into practice. Limits practice according to competence. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers. Ability to present information and respond to questions from employees, clients, managers, and general public. Excellent computer proficiency. (MS Office Word, Excel and Outlook) Must be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary customer service. Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of standards effectively. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written or oral form. Ability to prioritize, and check for errors and spot inaccuracies. Ability to predict the logical outcome of various choices and to make good decisions. Adapts to changes in procedures and technology. Willingly learns new skills as required for the position.Demonstrates competencies as defined by the agency for this position.Physical Requirements/Environment: Ability to safely and successfully perform the essential job functions consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and/or quantitative productivity standards. Requires full range of body motion, including unrestricted lifting, pushing and pulling capability. Requires corrected vision and hearing within normal ranges. Will frequently sit, stand, walk, drive, crouch, bend, kneel, climb stairs, lift and carry bulky/heavy items (up to 50 lbs) and use strength and dexterity to deliver safe and effective services on the basis of need and in accordance with agency policies and practices. Potential exposure to communicable diseases and bodily fluids. May work irregular hours and under stressful conditions.
