Job Summary:
A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice nurse with specialized training in providing Mental Health care to individuals of all ages. The PMHNP assesses, diagnoses, and manages the Mental Health needs of patients, including prescribing medications, offering therapy, and collaborating with other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive care.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Patient Assessment and Diagnosis:
· Conduct thorough psychiatric assessments to evaluate Mental Health status, including psychological, social, and physical factors.
· Formulate accurate psychiatric diagnoses based on assessment findings.
Medication Management:
· Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications, adjusting dosage and treatment plans as needed.
· Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness and side effects of medications.
· Educate patients and families about medications, potential side effects, and treatment options.
Therapeutic Interventions:
· Provide individual, group, or family therapy based on the patient's needs and treatment plan.
· Implement evidence-based therapeutic interventions to address Mental Health concerns.
Collaboration with Healthcare Team:
· Collaborate with psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to ensure comprehensive patient care.
· Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss treatment plans and patient progress.
Patient Education:
· Educate patients and their families about Mental Health conditions, treatment options, and coping strategies.
· Promote Mental Health awareness and provide resources for ongoing support.
Crisis Intervention:
· Respond to and manage psychiatric emergencies and crises.
· Collaborate with emergency services and coordinate appropriate interventions.
Documentation:
· Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic health records, documenting assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, and progress notes.
· Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.
Continuing Education:
· Stay informed about the latest developments in psychiatric and Mental Health care.
· Pursue ongoing education and training to enhance clinical knowledge and skills.
Qualifications and Requirements:
· Master's or Doctoral degree in psychiatric-Mental Health nursing.
· Current and active Nurse Practitioner license with a specialization in Psychiatric Mental Health.
· Board certification as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC).
· Prescriptive authority and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration.
· Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a healthcare team.
