Founded on March 6, 1882, Virginia State University (VSU), a public Historically Black College/University (HBCU) with an enrollment of approximately 4,700 students. VSU has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) since 1933. Located in Chesterfield County, Virginia, the 236-acre campus includes a farm which was established as a living, learning laboratory for the University and its stakeholders. Inextricably bound to the communities it serves, VSU is a pre-eminent economic engine for Southside Virginia.

The Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost serves as the Chief Academic Officer for the University. Working closely with the President, the Provost is responsible for the overall administration and quality of academic and student enrollment/success programs, serves as a creative facilitator of the University's academic mission, and promotes academic excellence campus-wide. The position builds on the institution's academic and programmatic strengths, while exploring new and innovative opportunities for future development. The position works collaboratively and effectively with the faculty, staff, students and administrators in a consultative decision-making process toward shared governance and promotes the University's mission and its overall goals of providing exceptional undergraduate, graduate, and professional educational experiences; developing and recruiting outstanding faculty; engaging in strategic planning for long-term institutional success; enhancing the academic and cultural experience at VSU and for the state; and promoting faculty-driven scholarly and creative endeavors.
The incumbent oversees the development, review and implementation of academic programs and policies. Evaluates the effectiveness of academic programs, policies, and procedures, and recommends changes as appropriate. Coordinates faculty and academic program reviews. Solicits funds for Academic programs and facilities. Provides oversight to the recruitment, evaluation and retention of academic staff. Provides oversight to the recruitment, evaluation, retention, tenure and promotion of faculty. Provides leadership and guidance to all Deans, Directors, and other personnel reporting directly to the Provost andVice President for Academic Affairs. Provides strategic, intellectual and administrative leadership for the academic areas of the institution while ensuring that the University achieves increasingly higher levels of academic excellence, rigor and recognition. Maintain accountability, supervise, encourage and equip all members of the Academic Affairs areas to become a cohesive team. Provide annual reviews for all team members within clearly established job descriptions. Plan, develop, and manage the annual budget all areas of Academic Affairs. Prepare and submit budgets as required. Represent the University for the President's Cabinet and other committees as appointed. Assume all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the President.
Minimum Qualifications
• An earned doctorate and minimum of five years of administrative experience in higher education.
• Previous teaching experience.
• Demonstrated collaborative philosophy of leadership in Academic Affairs and a commitment to shared governance.
• Extensive experience in Academic Affairs program development and management, accreditation, and strategic planning.
• Strong analytical, verbal, and written communication skills, with ability to effectively articulate instructional needs and address university-wide issues.
• Demonstrated commitment to the use of technology and an ability to facilitate faculty development in innovative methods of instructional delivery that leads to student learning.
• Demonstrated record of encouraging development of standards for student learning and the use of assessment for the improvement of educational outcomes.
• Demonstrated creativity in faculty development efforts and ability to provide a supportive learning-centered environment for students and faculty.
• Demonstrated use of effective management and leadership skills.
Additional Considerations
At least ten years' demonstrated successful experience in progressively responsible teaching, administrative and educational leadership positions in a college setting.
