Gotham Park Program Coordinator Position
Gotham Park, a new public space located underneath the Brooklyn Bridge in Manhattan, is seeking a part-time Program Coordinator to support public programs related to Community, Health, Wellness,and Artsn. The Program Coordinator is responsible for supporting the Chief Operating Officer and Gotham Park’s Board of Directors in the coordination, planning, delivery and management (including vendors, instructors and volunteers) of Gotham Park’s free programming and events. The coordinator will also support documentation of public programs including photography and media coordination and tracking of key metrics related to programming, including tracking audience demographics and other metrics requested by funders.
Job responsibilities
1. Program Management
- Assist with the coordination of the free programming for all ages, including youth and older adults offered at Gotham Park, including: communications, logistics, partner coordination, registrations, and staffing support at events.
- Assist the Chief Operating Officer in program development, scheduling and communications with programming providers and partner organizations.
- Primary lead in all communications with program participants and families of youth participants.
- Responsible for tracking of program-related data, including: registrations, attendance, program evaluations (i.e., surveys) (working knowledge of Eventbrite and Salesforce a plus).
2. Program Facilitation
- Facilitate outdoor health, wellness, arts and enrichment programming onsite including weekday mornings, afternoons, after-school hours, some early evenings and weekend events. Programming on-site is currently estimated at three to eight hour-long classes per week in 2024 beginning in March. Facilitation includes arriving early to bring any required gear out of storage and set it up, coordinating with the program instructor(s), checking in program participants, assisting with needs of instructors and participants during the program, cleaning up and storing equipment and materials.
- Assist horticultural coordinator with facilitating volunteer events for gardening, site cleanup and beautification.
- Manage program gear – organize, distribute and store materials for programs when applicable, and work with the Chief Operating Officer on managing new equipment or materials purchases when necessary.
- Facilitate monthly performances and events (e.g., musical performances, athletic clinics and demos), and Gotham Park’s Semi-Annual Community Block Party in Spring and Fall, including assisting Gotham Park’s Chief Operating Officer and Board with planning events, coordinating with vendors, acquiring necessary permits and facilitating logistics.
Other job duties
Contribute to the organization’s overall strategy to successfully achieve Gotham Park’s mission of reopening, revitalizing and reactivating the spaces under the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge to benefit the health, happiness, prosperity and resilience of our communities. Maintain and develop knowledge of the community needs, resources and best practices in the youth and intergenerational development, family and older adult support, wellness and outdoor education fields. Develop best practices to achieve strategic priorities, program efficiency, and successful time management. Represent Gotham Park in the larger community and conduct outreach to individuals and community partners for assistance with recruitment of programming participants and volunteers and creating awareness for Gotham Park’s programs in the community. At times, support non-program functions that may include: fundraising, marketing, special events, and program design. Create a work climate that is inclusive, free of bias, culturally sensitive and based in competence and respect.
Minimum education and experience
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree and a combined minimum of one year of experience in the following: program development, management, implementation; or administration; youth and/or older adult development & engagement; and/or outdoor education. Comparable experience in terms of time and background in similar fields and education/degrees will be considered.
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
The ideal candidate should be organized, a self-starter, a strong communicator, able to effectively manage varied tasks, and have strength in managing and supporting a diverse group of youth, families, and volunteers. The candidate should have experience and familiarity in youth, older adult and intergenerational program implementation and ability to manage vendors/staff/volunteers.
Preferred candidates should demonstrate some or all of the following:
- Ability to communicate and organize effectively – both verbally and in writing
- Strong self-motivation and time management skills
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently both independently and as part of a team
- Strong computer skills – with proficiency in Canva, Mailchimp, Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Eventbrite and/or online databases (e.g., Salesforce)
- Experience in program implementation, management, and evaluation through a race equity lens
- Familiarity with the neighborhoods surrounding our site including Chinatown, Two Bridges, the South Street Seaport, the Lower East Side, Little Italy and the Financial District, and experience, comfort, and passion in working with our local multigenerational and diverse community
- Experience in volunteer recruitment and management
- Experience working cooperatively with community groups and stakeholders
- Familiarity with and excitement for public space development, horticulture and urban green space, youth, older adult and intergenerational engagement, alternative sports and/or outdoor health and wellness recreation.
- Preference given to Bilingual (Mandarin, Cantonese or Spanish) candidates
Physical aspects of the job
This position requires familiarity and comfort with our local urban environment and the ability to: travel to and within the service area (below and around the Brooklyn Bridge in Lower Manhattan and the surrounding neighborhoods); walk to and from the site and our storage location 2 blocks away; pull wagons of materials and potentially lift up to 30-40 pounds; stand at the site and/or sit at a desk for extended periods of times using the computer and telephone; and lead group presentations and speak in public. This position requires use of a cell phone for on-site and remote coordination; Program Coordinator will be responsible for purchase and maintenance of a cell phone and service plan.
Terms
This is a part-time (20-25 hours per week) hourly staff position with an initial trial period of three months, with the potential to increase weekly hours up to a full-time position with advancement opportunities subject to the candidate’s performance and the organization’s need. This position has a starting hourly rate of $25 to $30 based on the candidate’s experience and education. This position includes both in-person work in New York, NY (Lower Manhattan) with hours determined by our programming and events schedule and remote office work with flexible hours.
