Job Summary
The Professional Development and Internships Specialist is responsible for implementing and assessing all Professional Development activities for students in the College of Engineering. The incumbent will strengthen the relationship with current COE industry partners and will create new connections with local industry for the purpose of providing internship opportunities for engineering students and potential collaborations for faculty in the college. To achieve this goal, the individual occupying this position will collaborate with the CSULB Career Development Center, the Academic Internship Office, and other campus offices. He/she will work with the engineering departments, the COE Director of Development, and with the Dean's Advisory Board to identify strategies to engage students and to attract support from industry partners.
The incumbent will be directly responsible for supervising student assistants and for managing all the office activities including mentoring and preparing students for internships, facilitating processes such as internship applications, monitoring the hiring process, maintaining records of student hiring, and collaborating with the appropriate University units on implementing more efficient procedures. Finally, the incumbent will be responsible for maintaining an updated website, and for acting as the liaison between COE, the engineering student organizations, and the AESB. This position reports directly to the Associate Dean for Academic Programs.
Key Responsibilities
- Strengthen the relationship with current industry partners and establish new connections with local industry to create internship opportunities for engineering students and potential collaborations with industry for faculty in the college. Collaborate with the CSULB Career Development Center, the Academic Internship Office, and other university offices, as well as faculty and staff in the college of engineering to create new programs and networking opportunities, promote events, engage students, and attract support from industry partners.
- Manage, implement, and assess all Professional Development activities. Facilitate processes such as internships applications and monitoring the hiring process. Supervise the organization of activities including advising and mentoring students to prepare them for internships, offering workshops, and information events. Act as the liaison between COE, the engineering student organizations, and the AESB.
- Oversee general office operations, supervise student assistants.

Computer skills utilizing data spreadsheets, web design, and publications. Ability to work independently. Ability to plan and organize tasks and projects and collaborate with staff, faculty, and students. Ability to work collaboratively with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus population. Excellent communication (oral and written) and interpersonal skills. Strong critical and creative thinking skills, sound decision making and ability the to remain objective. Excellent organizational skills, keeping track of priorities and meeting project deadlines. Full scope presentation skills from content development to in-person or online delivery of training programs. Strong computer skills utilizing data spreadsheets, web design, and publications.
Ability to communicate with an ethnically and culturally diverse campus community. Ability to follow all university policies, procedures, and guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures. Ability to contribute to a positive university experience for each and every student and assist in achieving the university's commitment to a "vision of excellence."
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in psychology/sociology, marketing, public relations, business, student services, or a related field and three years of professional experience in one of the student services program areas required.
Master's degree preferred.
Minimum of 5 years' experience in college level internship, placement, student development, advising, mentoring, employment recruiting or other relevant experience.
Experience in on-line systems and tools are desired.
Physical Summary
- Sedentary work - Involves mainly sitting. Walking and standing are minimal. Lifting is limited to lightweight objects. (10 pounds or less).

Compensation
Salary placement is determined by the education, experience, and qualifications the candidate brings to the position, internal equity, and the hiring department's fiscal resources.
CSU Classification Salary Range: The CSU Classification Salary Range for this position is $5,025 - $7,159 per month.

Time Base
1.0 time-base, 40 hours per week.
Duration of Appointment
This is a temporary position for 2 years with no permanent status granted. Temporary assignments may expire prior to the ending date.
