Produce Specialist

ABOUT THE ROLE:
The Produce Specialists meet our customers with a genuine greeting, a tip about how to store their produce, or a story about our farmers and are crucial to the customer experience at LAG&C. They are often the first interaction for the customer upon arrival. This role is responsible for setting up and/or closing down the produce section for daily business, providing warm and informed hospitality, and ensuring consistent operational procedures to maintain and merchandise our produce.
ABOUT THE TEAM:
The Grocery / Produce Team at LAG&C is our center of gravity, dedicated to presenting the community with local, organic staples and just-picked produce from favorite farmers’ market vendors alongside enduring pantry essentials and specialty items. Each member of the Grocery / Produce Team is an active participant and a bridge toward our mission of exploring generative food systems that enrich the lives of people and the places they live.

WHAT YOUR TYPICAL DAY WILL INCLUDE:

Merchandising 

• Prepare the Produce department for store opening and closing.
• Clean, trim, package, process, rotate, and stock produce.
• Maintain cleanliness, organization, and rotation of all produce.
• Build displays and arrange produce centerpiece to make attractive presentations, highlighting featured and/or unique items. 
• Follow company labeling, first in first out, and inventory procedures.
• Follow company waste protocols.

Customer Service

• Assist customers with product selection which may include making recommendations based on customer needs.
• Share product knowledge with customers.
• Educate yourself daily in order to create expertise in the department that includes: farmer information, recommended uses, storage, etc. 
• Work towards building repeat business with customers.
• Maintain relationships with repeat customers.
• Assist customers with special orders and provide attentive follow-through.

Inventory & Farmers’ Market

• Assists Produce Buyers at Farmers’ Market as needed.
• Assist with inventory and keeping track of priority fills.
• Assist with receiving and unloading produce, checking quality and quantity, as needed.
• areas, products, and supplies.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING:

• At least 2 years in retail, grocery, and/or hospitality industry.
• A passion for agriculture, local food systems, and/or basic cooking knowledge.
• California seasonal produce knowledge. 
• A knowledge of local farms at both Santa Monica and Hollywood farmers’ markets preferred
• Ability to provide outstanding customer service with a patient, positive attitude.
• Ability to communicate clearly, listen attentively, and be comfortable asking questions to determine the best solution.
• Ability to follow procedures and protocols seamlessly.
• Exemplifies company guidelines/protocols, workplace safety and health department standards
• Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs.
• Possess full body mobility (bending, stooping, twisting, and reaching).
• Flexibility to work weekends and holidays, as needed.

JOB TYPE + COMPENSATION RANGE

• Full-Time (5 days/8 hours a day) OR Part-Time (3-4 days/8 hours a day)
• Hourly
• $21/hr -  $23/hr
