Job description

NOTICE: Applicant must reside in the state of Utah.

DeLand Investigations is seeking an experienced private criminal defense investigator as a 1099-NEC contractor, but willing to consider an apprentice with the right investigative background, also as a 1099-NEC contractor. Spanish fluency and law enforcement investigative experience is preferred.

Work on case assignments will be near exclusively remote and it is required that you provide your own computer/laptop, printer, internet connection, smartphone, and any other equipment you might need. Though work is remote, the investigator must be or become a licensed Utah Private Investigator. An apprentice investigator must obtain a Private Investigator apprentice license from the state of Utah.

This announcement is for a 1099 INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR, not an employee. The hourly contract rate is dependent upon experience and is negotiable. Expected range is $40 to $100 per hour dependent upon your licensing. There is a consistent flow of cases to keep the investigator busy.

  • STRONGLY PREFERRED: Prior significant law enforcement or similar criminal investigations experience.
  • STRONGLY PREFERRED: Spanish fluency.
  • STRONGLY PREFERRED: Sex crimes investigations experience.
  • Must be reliable, dedicated, and consistent.
  • Intimate knowledge of the U.S. Constitution and Utah state law.
  • Familiar with state and justice court systems. Federal court familiarity is a plus.
  • Pays attention to granular detail, inquisitive, thoughtful, thorough, good communicator, tactful, strategic thinker.
  • Good understanding of law enforcement practices and procedures.
  • General understanding of various forensic disciplines (science, medical, ballistic, digital).
  • Experienced in witness interviews.
  • Experience with child forensic interviews either as the interviewer or evaluator is highly desired.
  • Ability to read, understand, and parse law enforcement reports for completeness and thoroughness.
  • Ability to write clear, concise, and thorough investigative reports.
  • Organized and able to work with high efficiency on your own.
  • Experienced with Microsoft Office products, Google Docs/Sheets, working with PDF docs (creating, organizing, etc.).
  • Tech savvy – computers, smartphones, Internet, image editing software, video editing software, word processing software, spreadsheet software, etc.
