Position Announcement
Utah Valley University is in search of a Principal Enterprise Architect! The principal Enterprise Architect directs/manages/supervises the architectural design, development, and deployment of the organization's technology (i.e., application systems, IT infrastructure). This position also leads the overall core system architecture of solutions of large-scale, transformational programs to ensure consistency, quality, and architectural integrity. This position drives design of key technical components, frameworks, interfaces, and services that can be leveraged by teams of developers. It provides leadership over product evaluations, proof of concepts, and product implementations, and defines strategy, plans, and governance needed to implement and manage Enterprise Architecture domain designs and technology standards.
Summary of Responsibilities
  • Strategy: Facilitates technology strategy and analyzes industry and market trends to determine potential impact on the organization. Analyzes the current IT environment to detect critical deficiencies and recommends solutions.
  • Model: Creates and maintains business architecture models that reflect the organization's strategies and goals. Develops and maintains Enterprise Architecture artifacts, such as business capability models, business model canvas, data reference models, and architecture roadmaps.
  • Design: Provides oversight of solution design, technical architecture, security architecture, infrastructure architecture, database architecture and design, system and application design, development, system integration, and testing activities for industry-aligned value-added business solutions.
  • Leadership: Leads and mentors a team of Enterprise Architects and solution architects to deliver high-quality technology solutions that meet the needs of the business units and the end-users.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree and at least four years of professional work experience or a bachelor's with at least six years of professional work experience, including full-time administrative experience. A degree must be in computer science, information systems/technology, engineering, business administration, or other related field.
Preferred Qualifications:
TOGAF, CISSP, GIAC, GCFE, CSSLP, ITIL, EA, SAP, AWS, MCSE, or equivalent certifications preferred.
Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities
Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of ensuring compliance with relevant policies, standards, regulations, and frameworks applicable within higher education.
  • Knowledge in adapting the architecture roadmap periodically as the business strategy and goals evolve to ensure ongoing alignment between the business strategy and the architecture strategy.
  • Knowledge to ensure designs support scalability, quality, performance, security, maintainability, and architectural integrity.
  • A solid understanding of the higher education business processes, data models, systems, and applications.
  • Expertise in understanding open/industry standards, current and evolving technologies, products, standards, patterns, and approaches.
Skills:
  • Skilled in defining and maintaining the Enterprise Architecture vision, strategy, principles, standards, and best practices for the university.
  • Skilled in analyzing current business processes and IT implementations to recommend solutions for improvement.
  • Skilled in collaborating with other domain Enterprise Architects to ensure breadth and granularity of strategies, standards, design patterns, and approaches.
  • Skilled in communicating and promoting the value and benefits of the Enterprise Architecture to various audiences within and outside the university, such as senior management, business stakeholders, IT teams, and external partners.
  • Excellent communication skills (verbal/written), presentation skills, analytical skills, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in architectural methodologies such as TOGAF or Zachman.
Abilities:
  • Ability to ensure solutions are delivered in alignment with the defined architecture strategies and goals.
  • Ability to collaborate with technology leaders to ensure the program takes advantage of appropriate architecture frameworks and remains in compliance with established security practices.
  • Ability to assist executives in defining organizational goals and strategic plans. Expert business knowledge with a comprehensive understanding of the organization and functional area(s).
  • Ability to mentor and coach junior architects and developers on best practices and methodologies.
  • A high level of proficiency in various IT domains, such as cloud computing, big data, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and user experience design.
