6000! That's the number of associates in the Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR). This division is the innovation engine of Novartis, focusing on powerful new technologies that have the potential to help produce therapeutic breakthroughs for patients.
NIBR Emeryville, California, houses approximately 170 associates and includes Novartis Institute for Tropical Diseases (NITD), an independent research institute within NIBR that applies drug discovery expertise to combat infectious tropical diseases. In addition, a protein interactomics drug discovery center has been formed at this site and includes medicinal chemistry, computer-assisted drug discovery, structural and biophysical chemistry, protein sciences, compound management, and analytical chemistry. Located in the heart of a key academic and biotechnology center, NIBR Emeryville collaborates with local institutions such as Stanford and the University of California campuses in Berkeley and San Francisco.
The Analytical group within Global Discovery Chemistry is seeking a highly skilled scientist with demonstrated experience in the implementation and use of protein structural MS. This will include native MS, hydrogen-deuterium exchange MS, hydroxyl radical protein footprinting, ion mobility MS and proteomics. The selected individual will apply structural MS techniques to investigate protein ligand interactions and elucidate the structure of macromolecular assemblies, including soluble and membrane protein complexes. Scientific curiosity, self-motivation, attention to detail, and strong communication skills are required.
Your responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
•Apply structural MS to study noncovalent interactions between proteins and their binding partners including other proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, carbohydrates, and small molecules.
•Determine the mass of intact protein assemblies, their stoichiometry, interactions between subunits, the relative position of subunits within an assembly, and the strength of inter-subunit interactions.
•Combine HDX MS, native MS, and ion mobility to study the shape and dynamics of protein complexes and protein conformers
•Develop workflows for bottoms-up proteomics sample preparation, MS acquisition and data analysis approaches
•Evaluate opportunities and when applicable, implement new analytical technologies and software to improve efficiency or reduce operating costs.
•Collaborate with IT and automation groups to develop and enhance the capabilities of the current infrastructure to adjust to changing lab demands.
•Collaborate with equipment vendors for new instrument purchasing and advancement of capabilities.
Minimum requirements
What you'll bring to the role:
•PhD in the biological sciences, chemistry or related field with at least 2 years of relevant structural MS experience in either an academic or industry setting.
•Solid background in analytical chemistry, Mass Spectrometry, protein biochemistry, and separation science.
•Strong hands-on experience with the operation and troubleshooting of mass spectrometers used for structural MS and related automation equipment.
•Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with the ability to work effectively on matrix teams.
