Principal BIOS Firmware 3LS Engineer
Description -
Responsible for analysis, design, programming, debugging, troubleshooting, and modification of software for firmware applications. Leads failure analysis activity related to firmware issues from the field. Partners with R&D BIOS team to resolve issues involving analog and digital hardware and software operating systems. May have responsibility for the programming of assembly language, machine language and high-level languages, including but not limited to C and C++.
Responsibilities
- Designs enhancements, updates, and programming changes for portions and subsystems of firmware, including DSP, embedded code, and PC BIOS/UEFI
- Analyzes design and determines coding, programming, and integration activities required based on general objectives and knowledge of overall architecture of product or solution
- Reviews and evaluates designs and project activities for compliance with systems design and development guidelines and standards; provides tangible feedback to improve product quality and mitigate failure risk
- Writes and executes complete testing plans, protocols, and documentation for assigned portion of application to ensure firmware is functioning properly; identifies and debugs, and creates solutions for issues with code and integration into application architecture
- Collaborates and communicates with management regarding firmware design status, project progress, and issue resolution
- Serves as an expert on all firmware related topics and acts as overall firmware leadership to provide perspective to cross-organization projects, programs, and activities
- Provides guidance and mentoring to less experienced staff members
- Leads communication with internal and external development partners responsible for all stages of design and development for complex products and platforms, including solution design, analysis, coding, testing, and integration
- Manages and expands relationships with internal and external development partners on firmware design and development
Education & Experience Recommended
- Bachelor's degree in relevant area. 7+ years of relevant experience
Knowledge & Skills
- Expertise in complex software systems, firmware, and embedded systems. Experience with PC BIOS/UEFI4
- Experience in overall architecture of firmware and interaction with hardware designs for products and solutions
- Experience with software development, systems engineering, or software product management
- Experience Intel ME (Management Engine) and BIOS/OS-level interface with security features including TPM and MPM.
- Extensive experience with multiple firmware design tools and languages
- Evaluating forms and processes for firmware testing and methodology, including writing and execution of test plans, debugging, and testing scripts and tools
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
- Expert business acumen and knowledge of root cause analysis and problem detection
- Adept at collecting and analyzing input from multiple sources (customers, sales, engineering, marketing, competitor, and management)
- Ability to understand and deal well with rapid development cycles and remain flexible in the face of uncertainty
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; mastery in English
- Ability to effectively communicate product architectures, design proposals and negotiate options at senior management levels
- Expert team skills and ability to cross functionally drive/influence work through others, ability to mentor and lead teams to achieve results for complex, ambiguous projects
