The VBAT Software team is a motivated group of engineers focused on developing the firmware and software that merges hardware, operating systems and applications for cutting-edge Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV). Firmware engineers work with electrical engineers, embedded engineers and systems engineers to design and develop custom PCB's, control systems, modern aerospace sensors, state-of-the-art UAV avionics, and groundbreaking Artificial Intelligence applications.

As a member of the Firmware team, you will be responsible for recommending and specifying hardware components, execute software bring up on custom electronic boards and systems, integration of new real time and general-purpose operating systems and writing "Bare Metal" software for a variety of sensors and interfaces.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

• Software bring up of new robotic platforms, control systems, and custom PCBAs
• Develop bare-metal firmware for controlling flight critical components
• Create software for system diagnostics and testing
• Work with and modify internal software build systems
• Research, design, and implement state-of-the-art vehicle interface software, taking ideas from conception to field deployment
• Prototype and bring up new hardware platforms
• Develop novel and efficient solutions in domains such as motor control, radio communications and vehicle networking

PROJECTS YOU MIGHT WORK ON:

• Refine repository of existing firmware to support new hardware, features, and capabilities 
• Integrate real-time operating system onto custom System-On-a-Module (SOM)
• Develop firmware to control robotic vehicles in flight
• Convert legacy bare-metal software to a RTOS based system
• Create new CI/CD pipelines with automated testing for embedded systems

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• 7+ years of professional firmware development experience
• Bachelors in CS, CE, EE, or requisite experience
• Strong C/C++ background a must
• Experience in bare-metal firmware development for embedded systems
• Linux Kernel or RTOS development - device trees and bring up on new hardware
• Familiarity with writing thread-safe multi-threaded programs
• Familiarity with common version control (git) and build systems (CMake, or similar)
• Experience in a collaborative development environment, focused on continuous integration/delivery & test-driven development
• Demonstrated record of working hard, strong communication skills, being a trustworthy teammate, and being kind to others

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Control software development for vehicles or robots
• 4+ years avionics development experience
• Experience working on safety-critical applications in a regulated industry (civil aviation, automotive, etc.)

$157,776 - $236,664 a year

Temporary employee positions: Hourly within range listed above + temporary benefits package (applicable after 60 days of employment)
