Description
Norfolk Criminal Justice Services (NCJS) provides local pre- and post- trial supervision for adults referred by judicial officials to encourage pro-social behavior, encourage accountability, enhance public safety, and decrease recidivism. NCJS seeks team members interested in providing skillful support in a service-oriented environment.
NCJS is seeking a motivated individual to manage a caseload of individuals placed on pretrial supervision, which involves administering and interpreting risk assessments to make appropriate referrals, complete investigation and supervision reports, maintain client records, and verify information to assist judicial officials in making knowledgeable supervision related decisions. Individuals in this position will support NCJS team in meeting any additional defined organizational goals.

Essential Functions
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
  • Conduct thorough face to face interviews in the jail or office setting
  • Complete detailed-oriented tasks in a fast-paced setting environment
  • Conduct detailed investigations using a variety of sources to obtain accurate information for reports
  • Prepare risk assessments reports for judiciary review
  • Conduct research to maintain client records in an electronic database
  • Conduct background investigations and interpret criminal history records
  • Interpret court records and documents
  • Communicate professionally with people from diverse socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds
  • Present testimony in Court as required
  • Administer drug and/or alcohol tests
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately within a team
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Establish and maintain positive, effective professional working relationships with internal and external contacts
  • Familiarity with local and state statutes
  • Effectively prioritize and manage multiple concurrent tasks
  • Work effectively independently as well as in a team environment
  • Maintain information reliability through effective record keeping
  • Maintain organization integrity by keeping defendant information confidential
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications; maintaining personal networks; participating in professional organizations.
  • Maintain a basic knowledge of computer skills and office equipment
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, or related fields such as psychology, sociology, social work, or an equivalent combination of training and experience
Two years of related experience, in areas such as community corrections/corrections, CRJ populations, and familiarity with court procedures, orders.
Preferred:
VCIN/NCIC Certification
Criminal Justice Experience/Knowledge
Professional Report Writing
Experience Working with Justice Involved Individuals
Additional Information & Requirements
  • Valid driver's license may be required by assignment.
  • US Citizenship or lawful residency for a minimum of 10 years
  • Able to obtain and maintain a certification to access Virginia Criminal Information Networks/National Crime Information Center databases
  • Obtain and maintain CJIS clearance
  • Complete the Department of Criminal Justice Services CORE training within 1 year of employment
  • Obtain NAPSA certification within 1 year of employment

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.
  • The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant's school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
