THIS POSITION IS CONTINGENT ON TASK ORDER FUNDING.


The Systems Safety Engineer for Pressure Systems will support the Safety & Mission Assurance contract at NASA Ames Research Center (ARC). The work includes ground-based Pressure Vessels and Pressurized Systems (PVS) ensuring that Pressure Systems are designed, installed, and operated safely. This is full time role with an expected start date in January 2024.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform design review, review analysis, inspect or review inspection reports, and review test reports to ensure conformance to code and requirements of ground-based Pressure Vessels and Pressurized Systems (PVS).
  • Participate in the management of the safety program for the certification of pressure vessels and piping systems, such as inspecting systems for recertification and documenting current configuration and components, obtaining specification of the components that verifies the pressure rating; performing piping and pressure vessel ASME calculations to determine Code compliance, review fitness for service of the legacy pressure system in accordance with API-579, preparing technical inspection and certification reports.
  • Perform inspection and documentation of ground-based, including laboratory, PVS.
  • Verify the maintenance on critical components in ground based PVS are performed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • This position requires US Citizenship or Permanent Resident status due to the sensitivity of customer related information.
  • This position requires a bachelor'sdegree in the field of engineering (mechanical, aerospace, industrial preferred).
  • This position requires 3+ years of relevant work experience.
  • This position requires an understanding of engineering principles and be able to apply them to the operation of Pressure Systems.
  • Solid analytical skills: Ability to analyze complex data and make informed decisions based on that data.
  • Maintain a high level of knowledge in the ASME B&PV and B31.3 Codes, and applicable ANSI, CGA, API, MSS etc.
  • Knowledge of industry standards: Understanding of industry standards and regulations related to Pressure Systems Safety.
  • Experience supporting aerospace facilities projects of various sizes and complexities.
  • Report monthly on assigned system status, identify problems and provide recommendations for resolution of excessive system overdue issues.

DESIRED:

  • Exercises a high degree of originality and sound judgment in formulating, evaluating, and correlating broad engineering research concepts, guiding the analysis of unique problems.
  • Proficiency in piping, pressure vessel, fluid flow analysis programs and modeling software for system design, analysis, and assessment including CAESAR II, PVElite, AFT Fathom, Arrow, etc..
  • Experience in performing fracture mechanics analyses using NASGRO or other industry software.
  • ASME inspection qualifications and credentials and/or certification as an AWS certified weld inspector (CWI).
  • Ability to apply safety analysis techniques such as Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Fault Tree analysis for identifying failure modes in design, manufacturing, assembly, and operations is desirable.

WORK LOCATION:

  • This position offers a hybrid work schedule.
  • Some travel may be required.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS REQUIRED:

All Bastion employees must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen; some contracts require participation in periodic random drug and alcohol screening programs.

  • Must have experience with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Must have a strong work ethic and must be safety culture oriented.
  • Must be organized with good time management skills.
  • Generally, an office environment, but can involve inside or outside work depending on the task.
  • Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods (90% of time).
  • May require lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs. (5% of time).
  • Regular attendance in accordance with an established work schedule is critical.
  • Ability to work outside normal schedule and adjust schedule to meet peak periods and surge requirements.

SALARY RANGE:

115,000 - 165,443
