PBF Energy Inc. (NYSE:PBF) is one of the largest independent refiners in North America, operating, through its subsidiaries, oil refineries and related facilities. We have an opportunity at our Martinez Refinery in California and are seeking a talented Engineer, Safety Instrumented Systems to join our team as a pivotal member that would play a key role here at PBF Energy.
The Engineer, Safety Instrumented System (SIS) supports the design, reliability, and proper operation of SISs throughout the refinery. Safety Instrumented Systems comprise one or more Safety Instrumented Functions (SIF) responsible to bring the process to a safe state in the event a process parameter exceeds a predefined safety limit.
The SIS engineer draws from their extensive industry experience and principles from multiple engineering disciplines to validate all aspects of the safety design. Processes covered include distillation columns, reactors, flare and relief systems, turbines, pumps, compressors, and furnaces.
The SIS engineer works to assure the availability of the SISs, drives improvements in documentation and Operations compliance with bypassing policies, and ensures on-time completion of required periodic testing.
The refinery environment is fast-paced and highly collaborative, where use of prioritization skills to balance urgent short-term work with crucial long-term objectives is valued.
Job Responsibilities May Include:

• Support the PHA, MOC, and Incident Investigation processes
  • Evaluate Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) reports for change impacts to SIFs.
  • Lead the Management of Change (MOC) process for review of all changes to SIFs throughout the site.
  • Lead causal analysis investigations for SIF related process safety incidents.
• Lead technical design for capital projects involving SIFs
  • Lead safety system audits and participate in Functional Safety Assessments (FSA) as required for new installations.
  • Design and implement new SISs or modifications to existing SISs including logic configuration, instrument wiring design, and instrument specification.
  • Assure the quality and completeness of SIS and SIF documentation including SIF overview sketches, functional descriptions, cause & effect tables, trip setpoint tables, and online and offline test procedures for SIF inputs, outputs and Safety Logic Solver (SLS) configuration.
  • Create and update operator graphics on the distributed control system (DCS), e.g. spider diagrams, that depict SIF states and allow SIF input bypasses.
  • Lead Factory Acceptance and Site Acceptance Tests (FAT and SAT) for new SISs and maintain required records.
• Maintain site SIFs
  • Manage and update the Safety Lifecycle Manager (SLM) SIF database to ensure completeness and accuracy of Safety Integrity Level (SIL) calculations.
  • Create test procedures for periodic SIF function tests and maintain required records.
  • Assess and respond to turnaround planning changes, i.e. the impact to SIL caused by rescheduling of unit downtime periods and corresponding offline SIF testing.
  • Maintain electronic filing systems for SIF documentation.
  • Compile and report SIS metrics for availability, SIF activation frequency, and SIF device failures.
• Train and mentor area support control system engineers (CSE) for safety systems in their support areas.
• Assure compliance with county, state, and federal regulations, and associated industry standards, and update site and corporate SIS policies as needed.

Position Specific Requirements:

• Provide off-hours coverage for control and shutdown system troubleshooting when area control systems engineers are unavailable.
• During periodic maintenance events such as plant turnarounds, an altered work schedule over an extended period may be required.
• Occasional after-hours support may be required to address issues with safety systems or refinery upsets.
• Possess a valid Driver's License

Minimum Qualifications:

• B.S. Engineering degree in Electrical, Control Systems, Chemical, General Engineering, or other relevant engineering branch
• 10 years' experience with dedicated safety logic solver systems in a process industry

Preferred Qualifications:

• Refining process knowledge
• TÜV functional safety engineer certification or similar
• Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA) methodology
• Causal analysis investigation experience e.g. RCA, Causal Learning, TOP, TapRoot, etc.
• Process safety industry standards knowledge e.g. IEC 61511 and ISA 84
• Capital project management experience
• Work experience with the following technologies:
  • Schneider Electric Invensys Triconex safety logic solver design
  • Honeywell Safety Manager safety logic solver design
  • Honeywell DCS configuration on Experion and TDC3000 series equipment
  • Honeywell HMIWeb graphics development
  • SIS network cybersecurity
  • General instrumentation and process analyzers (QMI)

The salary range for this position is $97,322.86 - $172,707.40. The compensation range listed in this posting is in compliance with applicable state law. Factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, job-related skills and internal peer equity will be considered in determining the selected candidate's compensation. In addition to salary, PBF offers a comprehensive and generous benefits package.
