1. Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, BSN desirable. Able to read and
communicate in English. BLS and ACLS.
2. Experience: One to three years of nursing practice, preferably in a peri-operative setting, or
in an Operating Room.

To perform this position successfully, the individual must be able to perform each

1. General
A. Coordinate and supervise patient care reflecting the needs of the patients, families, and
the facility.
B. Give care, showing flexibility with rules and regulations, as indicated by the patient’s
needs.
C. Make decisions reflecting knowledge of facts, knowledge of disease/surgical conditions,
care required, and good judgment.
D. Performance indicates knowledge in all areas of patient and family services specific to
outpatient/ambulatory care, equipment safety, conscious sedation, and procedures.
E. Utilize personal initiative, maintain a steady level of productivity, function as a selfstarter,
and a compatible and supportive team player.
F. Communicate appropriately and clearly to the Director of Nursing.
A. The Staff RN must:
I. Maintain a good working knowledge of medications commonly used in the
procedural setting, BLS and ACLS for full time and part time employees.
Registered Nurses will have 3 months to obtain ACLS certification.
II. Have knowledge of IV insertion skills and the fluids used, to include antibiotics
given.
III. Demonstrate the ability to perform a head-to-toe assessment of a patient and
reassess as needed.
IV. Have the ability to assess and reassess pain, utilize appropriate pain
management techniques, and educate the patient/family.
V. Perform all aspects of care (pre-operatively, intra-operatively, and postoperatively)
in an environment optimizing patient safety and reducing the
likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.
VI. Be able to formulate an individualized plan of care for each patient.
VII. Possess knowledge of cardiac monitoring and identifying dysrhythmias.
VIII. For assisting the physician during procedures, the candidate must be able to:
a. Make use of a working knowledge of scopes and care.
b. Label specimens correctly.
c. Assist in transport of patient to recovery.
d. Communicate patient information to the recovery RN.
e. Treat family and patients with respect and dignity.
f. Carry out medical and procedural aseptic techniques and universal
precautions.
g. Meet current documentation standards and policies and complete these items
during each workday.
IX. In addition to standard RN skills, the First Assist employee must be able to:
a. Preoperatively assess patient
b. Provide hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points,
ligating vessels, and by other means as directed and supervised by the
surgeon
c. Provide exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging techniques
d. Handle tissue as directed by surgeon
e. Suture fascia
f. Suture sub-cutaneous and skin tissue
X. The RNFA will function under the direct on-site supervision of the supervising
surgeon.
