GENERAL SUMMARY AND PURPOSE:

Responsible for execution of the external media/ public relations and organic social media function for the health system. Primary responsibilities include media relations in support of SAHS' top strategic initiatives, system programs and services, special events and campaigns, providing editorial services, crisis planning and response support. Requires successful integration of Media and Digital media engagement in line to support the overall health system strategic plan and marketing strategy.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, communications or related field required. Master's degree preferred. Minimum of three years of work experience in media relations, public relations or communications with demonstrated work history in crisis communications and public relations required.

Three years of experience with a track record developing and managing project or departmental budgets required.

Two to three years of Digital Strategy, social media communications experience. Continuing education credentials preferred (e.g., crisis communication, JIS/JIC). Must have a current, unrestricted Idaho or Oregon driver’s license and personal transportation in good working condition.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Organization's Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions.

Demonstrated proficiency in managing multiple communication platforms including traditional print and broadcast Media and Digital media. Excellent communication skills in writing, public speaking, interpreting concepts/ideas into written and/or verbal form for selected audiences. Audiences include news media, general public, staff, volunteers, healthcare providers, etc.

Proven leadership and team-building skills working with cross-functional teams internally and externally.

Ability to work well under pressure, tight timeframes and ambiguous external environment (e.g., evolution of health reform). Excellent organizational skills with demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines. Relationship builder with the flexibility, political savvy to "manage by influence".

Working knowledge on MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook. Working knowledge of social media platforms (e.g., Sprout Social) and media platforms (e.g., Cision). Must possess the ability to maintain confidentiality regarding all information.

Reporting to the Director of Communications, supervises the vendor/contractor relationships assigned to support the digital, public relations and video production functions.

Strategic Communications – Works with the Director of Communications to develop, implement a strategic media plan, in support of the SAHS strategic direction. Collaborates with SAHS leadership to provide seamless and integrated strategic communications, media relations support throughout the health system, affiliated ministries and providers. Works with senior leadership on presentations, talking points and community speaking engagements.

Collaborates with the Director of Advocacy and Government Relations and other system leaders on public commentary. Collaborates with Directors of Marketing and Communications, Service Line Leaders, and MarComm team members on Media and content/messaging for external audiences, pitch angles, story ideas to reporters.

Works closely with Saint Alphonsus Medical Group (SAMG), Saint Alphonsus Health Alliance (SAHA) and medical staff office to ensure physician spokespersons are appropriately mobilized for external Media and public relations efforts.

Supports the SAHS Regional Director of Communications in the role(s) of Public Information Officer for Saint Alphonsus hospitals in Boise, Nampa, Ontario, and Baker City, and for Saint Alphonsus Medical Group.

a) Works with appropriate internal contacts on internal and external communication plans related to crisis and emergency response.

b) Serves as the primary tactical lead in addressing breaking news and/ or potential crises to protect and advance SAHS’ brand, image and reputation management.

Digital Communications – related to organic social media, supports the Digital Strategy for engagement with the public in line with the overall health system online content and marketing strategy.

Works to confirm digital media policies are in place to ensure patient safety, confidentiality and HIPAA privacy compliant rules and regulations are enforced. Executes digital media plan to support strategic initiatives.

Media Relations – Executes a media relations program to respond to inquiries in accordance with policy and procedures. At all times, represents the system in a professional manner to external organizations.

a) Produces strategic media relations plans, develops strong media pitch angles, and leads pitch teams and story ideas to reporters.

b) Researches, writes and disseminates news releases, features stories, photo releases and story pitches to appropriate Media and special presentations.

c) Builds a contact database and maintains strong relationships with journalists, broadcast and electronic media contacts.

d) Follows system protocol in arranging interviews with hospital personnel, medical staff or volunteers. Serves as system spokesperson and escorts media representatives on system property.

e) Coordinates 24-hour, on-call coverage for media relations and serves as part of on-call rotation.

16. Communications Infrastructure –Executes communication plans using a variety of communication channels including electronic (e-mail and intranet) media, print publications and brochures, executive memos, face-to-face meetings, scripts, videos, talking points and FAQs.

Works with the Director of Communications to develop and implement the health system’s Crisis Communications Plan. Ensures a communications and media relations policy is in place to ensure patient safety, confidentiality and HIPAA privacy compliant rules and regulations are enforced.

Proactively identifies resources (vendors, copy and content writers, editors, etc.) to enhance and improve communication infrastructure to highest possible quality standard. Executes the video production and placement of testimonials, videos and short “clips” to extend the brand and image for the system.

Trinity System Communications Collaboration – Works closely with the Vice President of Corporate Communications and/or his/her designee at Trinity Health to ensure coordination and consistency on digital and media response related to system-wide or national issues.

Reporting – Monitors, analyses and reports on media trends and coverage of system-related news, Takes action as needed to ensure appropriate messages are being relayed through the media.

Responsible for compliance with Organizational Integrity by raising questions and promptly reporting actual or potential wrongdoing.

Participates in and fosters a performance improvement approach that includes both intradepartmental and interdepartmental activities.
