Job Description
The Walker Lab in the Department of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering at Syracuse University (Dr. Theodore Walker - P.I.) invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher beginning as early as Spring 2024. Term of appointment is up to two years. This search is open-ended: all candidates with research interests and/or backgrounds (especially chemistry and chemical engineering) that align with ongoing project areas will be considered. In particular, experience in synthesis and characterization of transition-metal- and/or phosphide-based electrodes; and in situ reaction kinetics monitoring in electrochemical processes is desired.
Current project areas include:
  • Electrochemical oxidation of bio-renewable precursors into lower-carbon platform molecules via dynamic, resonance-promotional modulation of surface energies over transition-metal-phosphide catalysts
  • Alkali-metal-resistant, bi-functional metal and acid catalysts for hydropyrolysis of waste plastics and biomass
  • Grafting of polymer brushes onto supported catalysts to direct selectivity and mitigate deactivation by poisons in liquid-phase processes

The Walker Lab's research profile encompasses catalyst synthesis, characterization, and experimental reaction kinetics measurements; but we also collaborate extensively with theorists, combining our experimental results with quantum-chemical and/or molecular dynamics simulations, toward a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental bases by which our catalysts transform raw materials into products. Accordingly, computational experts with an interest in co-advised appointments with theory-oriented faculty (including outside the department) will be considered.
The Walker Lab values diversity of opinions, perspectives and lived experiences in our team dynamics. Persons from historically underrepresented backgrounds are especially encouraged to apply.
Questions should be directed to the PI at:

Qualifications
Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering or a related field.
Job Specific Qualifications
  • At a minimum, training/experience (as expressed by publication record) in synthesis and characterization of catalytic materials; examples include but are not limited to: zeolites, metal-organic-frameworks, and metal-oxide-supported transition metals. Experience in experimental reaction kinetics analysis is highly desired.
  • Alternatively, expertise in molecular simulations (DFT, ab initio, classical, or hybrid methods) will be considered.
  • In particular, candidates with experience in synthesis of supported metal electrodes and reaction kinetics analysis in electrocatalytic processes are strongly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities
  • design, execution and analysis of experiments
  • assisting in drafting/editing of manuscripts for publication
  • assisting in drafting/editing of grant proposals
  • training/mentoring of Ph.D. students and undergraduate research assistants, as appropriate/necessary
  • Participation in community service (i.e., co-organizing symposia) and outreach (i.e., grade school STEM education activities) as appropriate, depending upon candidate's intended career path

Commitment to Supporting and Hiring Veterans
Syracuse University has a long history of engaging veterans and the military-connected community through its educational programs, community outreach, and employment programs. After World War II, Syracuse University welcomed more than 10,000 returning veterans to our campus, and those veterans literally transformed Syracuse University into the national research institution it is today. The University's contemporary commitment to veterans builds on this historical legacy, and extends to both class-leading initiatives focused on making an SU degree accessible and affordable to the post-9/11 generation of veterans, and also programs designed to position Syracuse University as the employer of choice for military veterans, members of the Guard and Reserve, and military family members.
Commitment to a Diverse and Inclusive Campus Community
Syracuse University maintains an inclusive learning environment in which students, faculty, administrators, staff, curriculum, social activities, governance, and all other aspects of campus life reflect a diverse, multi-cultural, and international worldview. The University community recognizes and values the many similarities and differences among individuals and groups.
