Job description

The Rockefeller University Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) Institute for Global Infectious Disease Research is led by Dr. Charles Rice, who shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 2020 for foundational research that led to the development of a therapeutic for Hepatitis C. The Institute is co-led by Drs. Michel Nussenzweig and Barry Coller. The Rockefeller University Center for Clinical and Translational Science (RU-CCTS), led by Dr. Coller, has a Community Engaged Research Core co-directed by Dr. Jonathan N. Tobin, a cardiovascular epidemiologist who conducts community-based comparative effectiveness and implementation research at Clinical Directors Network (CDN), the national practice-based research (PBRN) that he leads, which works with Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and other safety-net practices that serve communities experiencing significant health and social disparities. RU-CCTS and CDN have developed an approach to conducting highly community-engaged research that examines epidemiology and outcomes in community-based settings, while embedding basic science/mechanistic assays. This team has successfully conducted a series of highly stakeholder-engaged studies on the epidemiology, treatment patterns and outcomes for patients presenting to CDN FQHCs with skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) caused by Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA and MSSA). This community-academic full spectrum translational research team will apply the model to Chagas disease developed during the MRSA. Chagas disease is an emerging Infectious Disease in the USA, primarily affecting individuals and communities from Latin America, where the disease is endemic.

We seek an advanced Postdoctoral researcher to add additional research perspectives and methods to our team for this 18-month project. This is a great opportunity for an exceptional individual interested in studying population health models of Chagas Disease, an emerging Infectious Disease with significant associated morbidity and mortality, primarily affecting migrants, refugees and immigrants from Latin America. The combined rich environment of Rockefeller, CDN and FQHCs provides opportunities for participating in practice-based research and service-learning within both academic and community-based settings and will offer a unique and unparalleled opportunity for the candidate to develop a focus within the larger Chagas Disease project that will accelerate his/her career development. We look forward to identifying an outstanding candidate who brings a unique skill set to the team that will broaden the translational research perspective while building new and valuable research and communications skills. We strive to build a supportive culture in our endeavors. More information can be found at https://www.rockefeller.edu/research/community-engagement/ and https://www.CDNetwork.org/

Responsibilities include:

  • Lead a project in the fellows area of scholarship/expertise related to Chagas Disease and patients served by Federally Qualified Health Centers
  • Propose additional methods and measures to extend and enhance the full-spectrum translational research project
  • Serve as primary author on manuscripts led by fellow and co-author on other manuscripts, including preparing literature reviews
  • Provide introductory-level training in fellows area of expertise to team members and collaborators
  • Mentor research staff, including trainees, clinical scholars and practicing clinicians

Required:

  • PhD, DrPH, DNP, or ScD degree in a relevant field such as social and behavioral science, bioethics, policy, geography/climate science or other fields that can contribute to a broader understanding of emerging Infectious Diseases in communities experiencing significant health disparities

  • Experience working in a multi-disciplinary research team

  • Must be able to work independently as well as part of a multi-disciplinary team

  • Effective written and oral communication skills

  • Application Materials:

    • A Statement of rationale for applying, describing the quality, impact, novelty and promise of your work. The rationale should address your record of scientific contributions, creativity, responsibility, early career success, and potential for sustained or accelerated research success in the future (500 words)
    • A Research Summary that describes your most significant scientific contributions and research accomplishments from your postdoctoral career, written in the first person (1,000 words)
    • A Professional Service and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Statement (1 page max) that describes outreach activities and/or professional services, particularly those related to increasing diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) in the scientific community
    • Current Curriculum Vitae (cv)
    • Full-text publications and/or patents representing relevant work (up to 4)
    • Names, titles and email addresses for three references

Preferred:

  • Spanish language skills
  • Demonstrate aptitude to be a lead author on peer-reviewed publications and grant proposals
