Job description

 

The Department of Romance Studies at Cornell University is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher for a multidisciplinary project with a focus on social anthropology, biopolitics, and the question of global health after Covid, with a particular emphasis on India and Italy. This one-year position has a start date of July 1, 2024. 

 

The candidate will be affiliated to the Cornell University New Frontier Grant project, “The Biopolitics of Global Health after Covid.” They will work with a team of world-renowned researchers to examine the Covid-19 pandemic’s effects on how global public health is understood and practiced, with a comparative eye on social parameters in the Global North and South. The candidate will be affiliated to the Cornell University New Frontier Grant project, “The Biopolitics of Global Health after Covid.” They will work with the principal investigator, Professor Timothy Campbell, and a team of world-renowned researchers to examine the Covid-19 pandemic’s effects on how global public health is understood and practiced, with a comparative eye on social parameters in the Global North and South. 

 

 Cornell University and Shiv Nadar University in New Delhi are collaborators on the project. Primary workplace is Cornell University’s Ithaca, NY campus. International travel to and on-site collaboration with co-PI, Professor Yasmeen Arif, are required for up to 3 months during Fall 2024. The candidate must obtain and maintain a valid visa for the duration of the stay in India. Shiv Nadar University will host the stay and can assist in these efforts.

 

More specifically, the position will consist of: 

  • Assisting the team with logistical and administrative support for two project-related conferences.
  • Contributing to project visibility by updating the project’s website and social media accounts. 
  • Developing future research possibilities in line with the Cornell grant 
  • Furthering the activities of the New Frontier research group on the relation of global health to the Covid-19 Pandemic 
  • Helping the PI in organizing and publishing a collected edition of writings associated with grant activities on a variety of platforms (edited collection, e-commons archive of conference papers).

 Specific Requirements Profile: 

  • Preferred disciplinary background in Social Anthropology, Global Health, Sociology of Disease, and/or Biopolitics. 
  • Ph.D. in hand by July 1, 2024 
  • Ability to work with a multi-sited, multi-disciplinary project team. Proficiency in academic English and excellent communication skills are required. Some familiarity with Ithaca, NY, or New Delhi, India is an advantage.
