Position Information
Description & Details: This is a position to carry out research in organic chemistry. The project is funded by the Department of Defense.
Duty/Responsibility No.1 80% of time: Conduct laboratory research in synthetic organic chemistry to prepare monomers.
Conduct laboratory research in synthetic organic chemistry to prepare monomers. Develop methods for the synthesis of monomers from biomass
Conversion of monomers to oligomers and polymers using enzymatic and Lewis acid catalysts.
Develop new carbon-carbon bond forming reactions, especially furans and lignin derived compounds.
Develop new reactions to prepare amines from alkenes
Report research findings in the form of oral presentations
Report research findings in a formal report
Attend weekly group meetings
Attend department seminars
Duty/Responsibility No. 2 10% of time: Mentor undergraduate and graduate students Mentor undergraduate and graduate students
Train undergraduate and graduate students in conducting research in an organic laboratory setting
Teach students in conducting research in a safe manner.
Interact with students and discuss science

Work Schedule: 40 hours/week; 12-month position
Advertised Salary: $40,234+
Minimum Qualifications: PhD degree in Organic Chemistry
Core Competencies: Synthetic organic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, characterization of organic compounds. Excellent laboratory skills to conduct reactions in small as well as medium scale to synthesize monomers from biomass. Handling of air and moisture sensitive compounds. Experience in purification and characterization of organic compounds. Experience in the use of analytical instrumentation such as NMR, IR, MS, X-Ray, and HPLC
Computer skills. Use of chemdraw, word, excel, and powerpoint software
Preferred Qualifications:
Wide range of experience in organic synthesis including heterocycles
Experience in conducting reactions on small scale (50 mg or less) and large scale (100g or more)
Experience in method development
Handling of air and moisture sensitive compounds
Good skills in purification and characterization of organic compounds
Hands on experience in the use of analytical instrumentation such as NMR, HPLC, GC, HRMS, and IR
Good oral and written communication skills
Wide range of experience in asymmetric catalysis
Experience in the synthesis of chiral ligand
Polymer chemistry
