JOB SUMMARY

The Polysomnographic Technologist is responsible for performing all neurophysiologic studies performed in the scope of laboratory services. This includes the preparation of laboratory facilities and equipment, preparation of patients for recording data acquisition, and all clinical and research tests performed in the laboratory (these tests include the NPSG, CPAP Titration, MSLT, MWT and other montages

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Performs NPSG, MSLT and other laboratory tests attending to all aspects of laboratory and patient preparation, data acquisition, and data archiving under supervision. Obtains video and audio recordings of patients that meet laboratory standards under supervision. Performs specialized procedures, including CPAP/BiPAP titration and O2 administration, as indicated by physician's orders under supervision.  
• Reviews patient's chart/montage card prior to the sleep study and determines appropriate study procedure. Ensures that proper forms are completed by the patient and entered into the patient's medical record (e.g. consent forms, pre/post sleep questionnaires). Enters appropriate technical notes and other documentation in the medical record under supervision. 
• Prepares patient prior to the beginning of the sleep study making accommodations that are appropriate to the physical and mental status of the patient. Prepares patient for polygraphic recording by placing appropriate sensors and confirming signal integrity under supervision.  
• Maintains, calibrates and operates polygraphs for sleep studies under supervision. Interacts with equipment and patient in order to obtain accurate data. Monitors the patient's behavior and status throughout the study, attending to the patient's needs and making accommodations as necessary. Notifies the supervisor if problems arise.
• Performs related duties as required and accepts assignments from Chief Technologist and/or his/her supervisor and/or the Senior Technologist. 

Requirements

The position requires to be a graduate of a polysomnographic technology education program acceptable to the New York State Education Department and have a NYS Polysomnographic Technologist license. NYS Respiratory Therapy Technician (RRT) or Respiratory Therapist (RT) licensed also accepted. The Polysomnographic Technologist, RT, or RRT must register for the RPSGT certification program from the Board of Registered Polysomnography Technologists (BRPT) within 3 months after start of employment and must obtain his/her RPSGT certification within 12 months if the start of their employment.

Polysomnographic Technologist is required to maintain his/her license and certification active, including completing continuing education credits annually.

The Polysomnographic Technologist must also be BCLS certified.
