Job Summary
The Department of Public Safety is seeking multiple Police Officers – eligible for lateral transfer.

The Department of Public Safety is now recruiting lateral, sworn Police Officers who will expand a foundation of complex, compassionate and diversified safety services to the university community. Anticipated starting pay range is $33.68-$45.94 per hour commensurate with training, education, and experience.
Reporting to the OSU Police Sergeant, the OSU Police Officer is a uniformed trained individual in accordance with applicable Department of Public Safety Standards & Training (DPSST) requirements, applicable state law, and OSU Department of Public Safety policy to exercise the authorities of a Police Officer. The OSU Police Officer will act at all times in support of the
University’s mission and goals, and is expected to exercise their authorities in support of the University, and in a manner consistent with the organization’s values, University policy, department polices, and in a manner supportive of the culture of the OSU community.
The OSU Police Officer will provide a full range of law enforcement and security services. Police Officers will enforce laws, investigate calls, complaints and suspicious matters and incidents which may have an impact on the University, maintain order, assist people, identify criminal activity, apprehend offenders, and identify the source of problems in the OSU community and work with other law enforcement agencies to resolve issues.
The OSU Police Officer will support the department’s mission by providing essential functions while respecting the rights and dignity of all individuals. This position will work both independently and cooperatively to provide pro-active police protection and crime prevention consistent with community policing standards. This position will ensure the safety of the OSU community in an orderly, efficient, and professional manner. It is expected that the OSU Police Officer will conduct
investigations of issues and crimes which lead to identification, apprehension, and prosecution of offenders.

Key Responsibilities
Police Operations – 70%
  • Performs varied and diversified duties involving the patrol of assigned area, buildings, streets and grounds, with responsibility for the protection of life and property though fair, consistent and equitable enforcement of motor vehicle and criminal laws, policies, rules and regulations of the Department of Public Safety, Oregon State University.
  • Provides special security of the Radiation Center and other buildings under contract.
  • Responds to emergency calls and calls for assistance including, but not limited to fire alarms, intrusion alarms, and accidents.
  • Conducts investigations of accidents and assigned cases.
  • Exercises considerable judgment and resourcefulness in the investigation and arrest of criminals, and particularly in maintaining law and order during time of emergencies.
  • Contacts the public in a responsive, non-escalatory manner when warning, citing or arresting persons for violations of the law or safe driving practices.
  • Patrols street and grounds within assigned areas either on foot, on a bicycle, or in a vehicle, performing visible patrols to deter violations and crimes.
  • Performs patrol duties requiring considerable physical effort, which may demand continuous standing, walking, and occasional strenuous positions, under varying climatic conditions, with exposure to occupational hazards that may result in total disability or loss of life.
  • Assists other law enforcement officers in service warrants, apprehending criminals, crowd management and other general law enforcement work. Directs activities in accidents and disaster areas, rendering first aid and restoring traffic to normal; and investigate accidents, as required, to determine cause, and cite or arrest when laws have been violated.
  • Guard university property.
  • May appear in court as a witness to present testimony in traffic violations and criminal laws.
  • Makes investigations of all complaints of criminal acts reported by the public or assigned by a superior.
  • Keeps records and make required reports regarding activities.
  • Operates automobile, firearms, radios, radar equipment, computer terminals, and associated job-related equipment. Participates in crime prevention and public safety training programs.
  • Works closely and in conjunction with DPS staff, university administration, students, faculty, and staff to support and carry out the university values and provide for the safety of our full community.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Community Collaboration – 15%
  • Works closely with community partners including other law enforcement agencies in matters related to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses.
  • Assists other law enforcement agencies with requests for service, including state or federal agencies.

Training and Education– 15%
  • Maintains any and all qualifications required by OSU and the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST).
  • Actively participates in departmental and university related trainings as assigned.

What You Will Need
  • Must be a U.S citizen
  • Must be 21 years or older at time of employment
  • Possession of an Oregon Driver’s License by start date
  • Three years of experience as an Oregon certified Police Officer or eligible for lateral certification by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training
  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED
  • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity
  • Possess DPSST Telecommunications certification OR ability to obtain within 18 months of hire.
  • Understand and demonstrate knowledge of OSU-DPS administrative policies, procedures, rules and guidelines within 18-month probationary period;
Satisfies or able to satisfy all of the following criteria:
  • Must successfully pass a comprehensive background assessment that includes: criminal history check; driving record review; medical examination; psychological evaluation including drug screening; and an inclusive appraisal of work history.
  • Adult CPR with First Aid and Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) certification required within 60-days of employment.
  • Law Enforcement Data Systems (LEDS) Certification required within 90 days of employment.

A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

What We Would Like You to Have
  • 60+ credit hours from an accredited university, school or college.
  • Proficiency in a second language
  • CPR for the Professional Rescuer with AED specialization
  • Experience as a Police Officer in higher education

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
This position is deemed essential and supports essential functions on campus operations and may be expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency, and other University work curtailments of closure.
The employee may occasionally be required to engage in physically combative confrontations with resistant and possible violent individuals in order to subdue them.
This position will require presence during evenings and weekend on campus and at other locations for emergencies, events and meetings.
This position may involve shift work that can include day shift, swing shift, or night shift duties that administration assigns
