The Medford Police Department is recruiting for four (4) entry-level Police Officers.
We are looking for candidates who are highly motivated with good communication skills, who value teamwork and collaboration. With nearly 170 employees and more than 30 volunteers, we are committed to providing the highest possible level of police service to our community, while delivering excellent customer service in everything we do.
This position is for Patrol Officers who are assigned to one of the five beats we have in our City. We expect our officers to not only respond to calls for service, but to proactively patrol their beat and establish relationships with our citizens. Officers are encouraged to find creative solutions to repeat problems in hopes of reducing crime.
A qualified applicant is one who:
  1. Is a high school graduate or has a GED equivalent.
  2. Is 21 years of age by date of hire with no felony convictions.
  3. Has a valid driver's license by date of hire.
  4. Successfully passes the exams (see more information in Supplemental Information section below).
Additional requirements:
  • Successfully pass the Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT) administered by MPD.

  • Obtain Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) clearance upon hire.
  • Ability to speak English clearly.
  • Ability to write the English language clearly, accurately, concisely, legibly, and correctly.
  • Ability to obtain DPSST Basic Police Certificate after successful completion of the academy and field training.
  • Ability to work 24/7 schedules.
  • Ability to maintain an acceptable driving record.
  • Tobacco use and vaping is prohibited in all City buildings and Police vehicles.
Work schedule:The patrol teams work 3/12 and 4/10 weekly schedules. These schedules, combined with a dedicated eight (8) hour training day every month, makes finding a balance between work and home time easier. Monthly training includes valuable refresher topics such as defensive tactics, EVOC, crisis negotiation, MRT, HAZMAT, ethics, leadership, CPR/first aid, and recent legal updates.

    Essential Functions of the Position:
    • Prepares and disseminates reports and makes recommendations on actions to be taken.
    • Investigates local, state, and federal crimes which may include determining:
      • Appropriate actions to be taken.
      • Resources to utilize.
      • Who to interview.
      • Appropriate evidence to be collected.
      • If illegal activities are civil or criminal infractions.
  • Responds to calls for service, which may include:
    • Determining level of emergency or non-emergency.

  • Enforces local, state, and federal laws; cites and/or arrests individuals who have violated applicable laws.
  • Provides credible court testimonies.

    2. Schedule and complete the NTN PSSA assessment and Frontline National Law Enforcement exam (see NTN details below) by end of day Friday, February 2, 2024.
    3. After position closes, based on the NTN scores, top qualified applicants (up to 48) will be invited to participate in the assessment center, scheduled the week of February 20, 2024.
    4. All candidates that pass the assessment center will be invited to participate in the Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT), onsite at MPD, Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 9:00 am. Successful completion of ORPAT is required to make the eligibility list.
    5. Candidates who pass the assessment center and ORPAT will go through a background investigation.
    6. Candidates who pass the background investigation will be presented with a conditional offer of employment.
    National Testing Network (NTN):
    NTN is the service provided to conduct the Frontline National Law Enforcement exam in a standardized, professional environment. NTN does not replace the Medford Police Department's responsibility and decision making in the evaluation process.
    All Police Officer applicants must take the Frontline Nationalexam and Public SafetySelf-Assessment (PSSA) with the by the application closing date. Applicants are not required to complete NTN's Personal History Questionnaire.
    1. Frontline National Exam

    • In person and virtualtesting is available.
      • Be sure to schedule in advance to ensure you complete the process by the deadline!
      • NTN testing is available at the White City Rogue Community College Table Rock campus.
      • Other in-person sites include Coos Bay, Portland, and Klamath Falls.
  • The total test time is approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes.
  • I've you've already taken the Frontline National exam, your results are considered valid if taken within the last 12 months from date of online application submission.

  • This cost for this exam is $65.00; the City will reimburse the exam cost upon hire.

  • 2. Public Safety Self Assessment (PSSA)
    • To avoid missing the deadline, we recommend you don't delay in completing this part.
    • There is no cost for this assessment.
    • This assessment is scheduled on your own time and can be taken at home.
    • There are two parts; part 1 takes approximately 1 hour / part 2 takes approximately 1 and 1/2 hours.

    Hiring will be subject to successful completion of the following:
    • Comprehensive background investigation
    • Favorable driving record
    • Psychological examination
    • Physical examination
    • Clear drug screen following federal law (which includes testing for cannabis)
