Pikes Peak State College is located at the foot of Pikes Peak in Colorado Springs, Colorado. PPSC offers broad programs in transfer, occupational, and preparatory subjects emphasizing student and community needs. Colorado Springs is a great city to both work and live.

JOB DUTIES:Your application must provide a detailed description of your relevant work experience in relation to the following duties:This position is responsible for supervising subordinate Police Officers in the Campus Police Department.
The purpose of this position are:
  • Position is in charge of the Crime Prevention Program, Investigations, Special Events and acts as Safety Management Liaison between departments.
  • Position assists the department with managing and supervising key areas of responsibility. Utilizes the accepted National "Span of Control" standards (NIMS, National Incident Management System).
  • Contacts victims or reporting parties regarding incidents, and collects and records the information for use by the agency, institution, administration, or courts. For example, crime reports, injury reports, vehicle tows, fire alarms, etc.
  • Interviewing victims and witnesses of criminal activity in an attempt to establish probable cause for the successful contact, arrest and prosecution of a suspect.
  • Contacts people to explain or assume campus use or access in accordance to institutional guidelines.
  • During orientations, at booths, and as normal course of events, clarifies Criminal Code or Institutional Rules and Regulations to whoever may request the clarification and its rationale.
  • Restraints for probable cause and warrant arrests of individuals.
  • Officially defends the agency's positions, by providing testimony in criminal, civil and administrative court and school hearings.
  • Provides explanations to citizens about actions the agency has made related to bicycle, parking, admits, etc., regulations.
  • Oversees and participates in the interviewing of witnesses, suspects, and victims. Oversees and/or participates in the writing of reports and various memoranda in order to distribute information to officers, other agencies, and prosecuting attorneys.
  • Contacts peers at El Paso County Sheriff's Office or other law enforcement agencies to resolve immediate problems or issues of mutual interest, or to exchange information regarding ongoing investigations, protests or civil disorder and special events.
This position provides first line supervision to the officers, corporals and noncommissioned personnel on duty. Coordinate work activities by reviewing crime and incident reports to gauge the effectiveness of police operations and provide correction when necessary to improve quality of work or alter focus of attention. This includes developing and overseeing systems to support adequate patrol coverage, coordinating responses with other agencies, and commanding details assigned to work at special events.
This position performs administrative tasks including checking work schedules to ensure adequate shift coverage exists, ordering and maintaining all police related supplies and equipment, approving leave requests, preparing monthly and annual department reports for the Chief of Police, reviews and modifies police procedures as needed. Recommends procedural changes to the Chief of Police. Prepares reports and information memos as required. Position also attends meetings with other college departments, as well as outside organizations, on matters of mutual concern.
This position will serve as the departmental liaison to both on-campus departments and off-campus agencies and organizations. Examples of on-campus liaison may include: Student Disciplinary, Student Success and Human Resources. Off-campus liaison may include: Colorado State Patrol, El Paso County Sheriff's Office, Colorado Springs Police Department, District Attorney's Office, Drive Smart Colorado, Pikes Peak Region DUI Task Force, etc. Maintains and serve as the departmental contact for the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) board. Inadidition, maintains review and interprets police operations procedures, regulations, local, state and federal statutes, and intergovernmental agency agreements for correct job results, response and performance. Receives and investigates citizen and internal complaints against staff. Oversight includes recommendations for corrective and/or disciplinary actions.
This position provides supervisory police services (mutual aid) to other law enforcement agencies when notified or requested by responding to urgent calls and critical incidents, demonstrations, riots and major disturbances as well as gathering information for other agencies when requested to aid in their criminal investigations.Conducts criminal investigations including collecting and securing evidence; lifting latent fingerprints; photographing crime scenes; conducting neighborhood surveys; developing and following up investigative leads; interviewing and interrogating suspects, witnesses and victims; and the detection and arrest of wanted criminals. Appear in traffic, county, district and federal court to provide testimony relative to the investigation of crimes and the charging of suspects with criminal and non-criminal offenses.
This position establishes continuing and ongoing community relations with the public through verbal and written interactions and communications. Gives lectures and demonstrations on crime prevention and safety, provides assistance to the Director of Emergency Management in the planning for operational response, business continuity and business recover issues. Provides assistance to the Director of Emergency Management in the development of plans and recommendations designed to mitigate the lasting impacts to campus. Instructs Law Enforcement Classes for the Department and other agencies to maintain proficiency in the certified instructional areas. Maintains Instructor certification through the issuing authority through instructing and/or professional development as required to maintain certification. Complies with all P.O.S.T. mandates to instruct classes.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education and Experience:

Current, valid Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certification

Three years of experience in an occupational field related to the work assigned to the position. Do not use "SEE RESUME" statements on application; your application must be completed in detail and clearly document your relevant work experience. (Part time experience will be prorated).

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Must be at least 21 years of age; possess a valid Colorado Driver License and no Felony convictions; domestic violence convictions; acquired more than seven points in the last year and/or more than 12 points within the last two years on a driver's license; alcohol/drug related traffic convictions in the last three years and repeat alcohol/drug convictions after the age of 18 within the last ten years. You may need to submit to and successfully complete a pre-employment background check and a Motor Vehicle Driving Record check.
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Prior supervision experience in law enforcement or military. Experience in a wide range of law enforcement activities. Experience and ability to work with diverse groups of people. Participating in criminal investigations and court procedures. Understand and determine appropriate rules and regulations from various sources. Attention to detail. Computer knowledge to include, Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel experience. Interpersonal and customer service skills. Public relations skills. Associate's degree or higher in criminal justice or related. Completion of ICS 100 through 400. FEMA certified Instructor Training Course. Certified as a Field Training Officer.

Substitutions:

College or University coursework in Criminal Justice or related from an accredited institution may substitute for the Law enforcement experience on a year-for-year basis.
