THE OPPORTUNITY
Police Officers are responsible for performing law enforcement, investigations, crime prevention, code enforcement, and animal control work by enforcing state and local laws and regulations in a highly visible public contact setting. Police Officers shall have all police powers authorized by Local, State, and Federal Law. Police Officers shall have comprehensive knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, law enforcement methods, procedures, and federal, state, and Local laws and ordinances. This position requires the flexibility to work hours needed for the safety of the Town including shift work, evenings, weekends, and on-call.

The Hudson Police Department K9 program consists of one narcotics and tracking trained K9. The department is looking to hire a proactive officer to assist in the detection and seizure of illegal narcotics. The Hudson Police Department K9 program is funded solely on donations from public and private entities. The K9 handler will be responsible for fundraising, working with our 501(c)(3) organization, and providing monthly accounting of all K9 funds. The K9 handler will be assigned a patrol shift and have an assigned take-home K9 patrol vehicle.

JOB SUMMARY

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Patrol town streets responding to citizen complaints or observed violations and determine appropriate actions.
  • Participate in, implement, and develop programs in crime prevention and public education programs to enhance law enforcement and community relations.
  • Mediate neighborhood complaints: determine if a violation has occurred; gathers evidence and completes the complaint with a warning or summons as appropriate.
  • Conduct follow up to cases, author formal reports, and testify in court.
  • Foster a close and cooperative working relationship with the Hudson Fire Protection District, RE3J School District, 501(c)(3) organization, and other governmental agencies.
  • Able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other Town officials, employees, county, state, and federal authorities, civic leaders, and the public.
  • Capture, secure, and transport animals to a secure facility.
  • Troubleshoot animal behavior problems in the field; investigates and quarantines domestic animal bites; promotes responsible pet ownership.
  • Enforce municipal codes related to property maintenance and issue violations as applicable.
  • Enforce traffic laws, including parking violations.
  • Attend bi-weekly K9 training with the department's approved K9 Training Group.
  • Conduct K9 presentations and demonstrations at local schools and community events.
  • Provide for the care, boarding, feeding, and exercise of the assigned K9.
  • Develop relationships with donors, attend fundraising events, and seek new sources of funding for K9 program.
  • Assists with monthly accounting of program funds.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current Colorado Peace Officer (POST) Certification
  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • Must possess High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must have a valid Driver's License
  • Previous experience in law enforcement is required
  • Previous or current experience as a K9 Handler is highly desired but not required
  • Possession of or ability to obtain current firearms qualification
  • Possession of or ability to obtain current CPR and First Aid certifications
  • Ability to meet all State of Colorado K9 certification requirements
  • Must be able to properly house police K9
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with a wide variety of people, including other law enforcement entities

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Understand and apply the basic municipal ordinance contents and the ability to learn, understand and use the Hudson Municipal Code
  • Ability to perform animal control and code enforcement functions
  • Develop and maintain respectful relationships with citizens
  • Provide fair and consistent interpretations and enforcement
  • Exhibit flexibility where possible without compromising public safety
  • Maintain composure while taking command and restoring control in volatile situations
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in tense situations
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to prepare reports in a clear, concise, and organized manner
  • Ability to make reasonable judgments and work under limited supervision
  • Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment, manage demand for service, changes approach or method to best fit situation
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems in the field and over the phone; investigate, review, and analyze criminal statistical data, develop effective measures to ensure effectiveness and efficiency with the office, and complete crime reports as required
  • Ability to use the department's K9 accountability software system

The employee hired in this position will be required to pass an extensive criminal background check, psychological exam, physical exam and drug screen as a condition of employment. As a part of this background check the applicant must not have consumed any illegal substances listed under sections 18-18-203 18-18-207 within the last year and must not have consumed any marijuana substances within the last six months.
