Police Officers report to the shift Sergeant and are responsible for the day-to-day law enforcement, community policing and security service delivery for the assigned shift. Officers are often tasked with solving complex community problems or conducting all aspects of investigations.

*Educational stipends for applicable degress and certifications (applicability of program to police work to be determined/approved by Chief of Police):

  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification: $15/week ($780/year)
  • Associate's degree: $20/week ($1,040/year)
  • Bachelor's degree: $25/week ($1,300/year)
  • Master's degree: $30/week ($1,560/year)

Pay:

  • Certified rate: $25.25/hour. Starting rate for applicants who are certified as a full-time law enforcement officer in Maine is $25.25/hour plus shift and specialty differentials. Applicants with significant law enforcement experience may be eligible for a higher starting rate. 
  • Non-certified (or part-time certified) rate: $22.73/hour. Starting rate for applicants who are NOT currently certified as full-time law enforcement officers in Maine (including certified part-time officers) is $22.73/hour plus applicable shift and specialty differentials. The University will support training and certification by the Maine Criminal Justice Academy, and once certification is obtained, incumbent will receive an increase to the certified rate.

Applicants who are certified as law enforcement officers in a state other than Maine may be eligible for a waiver from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy. 

This is a 40 hour per week position on a schedule that is determined by unit seniority and shift bid, with overtime opportunities.

 

Qualifications:

Preference will be given to those with a Full-Time Law Enforcement certification from the Maine Criminal Justice Academy (certified out of state candidates may be considered for a waiver); Maine Pre-Service Law Enforcement academy candidates may also be considered.

Required:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Maine Criminal Justice Academy certified part-time law enforcement officer; full time certified or out of state waivers preferred
  • Valid Class C Maine driver's license
  • At least one year of law enforcement or related experience
