Responsibilities and duties –
The individual assigned to this position is responsible for the safe, environmentally compliant, and efficient operation of the facilities located in the Maine Region. The projects consist of several FERC-Licensed hydroelectric power stations and associated infrastructure. Some specific responsibilities include the following:
· Strict adherence to Dam Safety policies and procedures.
· Qualify in and maintain qualifications for all facility-designated operating watch-standing positions.
· Maintaining security at each powerhouse and at all outlying auxiliary buildings.
· Being able to observe and record facility parameters.
· Identifying any abnormal plant condition and taking the appropriate corrective actions when possible.
· Starting, stopping, and controlling all physical plant assets utilizing both local and remote systems.
· Safeguarding the plant by complying with and enforcing all facility safety policies.
· Maintaining and enforcing all local, state and federal environmental permits and regulatory requirements.
· Coordinating and recording all facility related events as appropriate.
· Operating the plant in the most efficient manner possible without degrading plant equipment.
· Complying with company standards, practices and policies.
· Assisting in developing and improving operational policies and procedures.
· Performing maintenance tasks as assigned.
· Working a split-shift schedule, including working overtime (when required).
· Performing tasks that require physical exertion.
· Respond to plant emergencies and operational call-ins.
· Being proficient in the use of personal computers. Specifically in the use of word processing, spreadsheets, and database software.
· Plant housekeeping, vegetation control and general facility maintenance.
· Provide helper support and involvement with maintenance personnel as needed.
· Performing other collateral duties as assigned.
Organizational Relationships –
The Plant Operator will report directly to the Regional Operator or Lead Operator. In all matters concerning dam safety and after contacting the Regional Operator, the Plant Operator will also inform the Division Manager immediately.
Qualifications –
· An associate's degree in a technical or engineering discipline or equivalent.
· A minimum of 1 year experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment, experience in hydro, steam and/or gas turbine power plant operations is preferred.
· Experience in the use of personal computers.
· Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.
· Ability to understand complex issues as they relate to plant operations.
· Ability to work extended hours, if and when required.
· Ability to perform operational tasks. Operational tasks may include:
o the ability to distinguish between colors
o the ability to climb ladders and to be at heights of 80 -100 feet
o the ability and dexterity to manipulate various size components from valves to small electrical switches to computer keyboards
o lift and carry equipment, tools or materials as required
o the ability to perform chemical sampling procedures
o the ability to "handle" quick changing situations under stress
