Schedule Details/Additional Information:
Typical schedule would include Monday through Friday between hours of 830AM- 600PM.
Major Responsibilities:
  • ASSISTS THE PHARMACIST IN THE PREPARATION AND DISTRIBUTION OF MEDICATIONS ACCORDING TO ESTABLISHED POLICIES, PROCEDURES, AND PROTOCOLS.
    • Fills medication cassettes & first doses utilizing robot technology.
    • Exchanges unit dose medication cassettes to patient care areas daily. Returns unused medications to the pharmacy to be credited to the patient if appropriate.
    • Receives medication orders and forwards to the appropriate pharmacist.
    • Fills medication orders, medication kits, stock requisitions, etc. accurately.
    • Delivers checked medications to the patient care units in the medication cart patient specific drawer and/or refrigerator or by pneumatic tube, as appropriate, to meet established turnaround times.
    • Prepackages bulk tablets, capsules, and oral liquids, as needed, to support the unit dose drug distribution system.
    • Compounds special preparations that are not commercially available according to referenced formulation directions.
    • Maintains proper packaging records.
    • Answers customer requests and makes STAT deliveries when requested.
    • Accurately calculates medication dose.
  • PREPARES IV ADMIXTURES, CHEMOTHERAPY, AND HYPERALIMENTATION SOLUTIONS ACCORDING TO ESTABLISHED POLICIES, PROCEDURES, AND PROTOCOLS.
    • Prepackages standard IV products that are not commercially available according to procedures.
    • Documents the preparation of neonatal stock solutions and sterile batched products.
    • Cleans hoods & work environment per established schedule. Completes appropriate documentation.
    • Utilizes proper aseptic technique when preparing IV admixtures. Participates in the department sterility testing program.
    • Follows proper gowning and safety precautions when preparing chemotherapy.
    • Completes chemotherapy preparation logs and receipts per procedure
    • Cleans, calibrates, operates and maintains the automated compounder to properly prepare parenteral nutrition solutions.
    • Performs math calculations to accurately determine the volume of medication required.
    • Compounds IV admixtures accurately.
    • Maintains refrigerator temperature logs to ensure appropriate storage of medication.
  • MAINTAINS ADEQUATE STOCK OF MEDICATIONS AND SUPPLIES ACCORDING TO ESTABLISHED POLICIES AND PROCEDURES.
    • Assists in the receiving, unpacking, and storing of pharmaceuticals and supplies in their proper locations.
    • Fills medication floor stock accurately to preestablished par levels.
    • Delivers floor stock medications to patient care area per established schedule and prn when stockouts occur.
    • Refills medications to automated dispensing devices accurately.
    • Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date.
    • Enters the shortest expiration date of medications refilled to the automated dispensing devices.
    • Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.
    • Restocks medication and IV dispensing areas within the pharmacy.
    • Organizes and prioritizes work to ensure pharmacy services are provided in a timely manner.
  • ADDITIONAL PHARMACY TECHNICIAN II JOB ACTIVITIES
    • Serves as a preceptor for the orientation / training of new Pharmacy Associates, job shadow students, and College of Pharmacy students.
    • Serves as an individual mentor to new Pharmacy Technician Associates.
    • Completes departmental projects as assigned.
    • Participates on departmental teams.
  • UTILITIZES THE HOSPITAL AND PHARMACY COMPUTER SYSTEMS TO PERFORM DATA ENTRY AND MEDICATON BILLING FUNCTIONS.
    • Generates charges and credits for medications accurately.
    • Generates fill lists, reports, and labels, as required.
    • Enters outpatients into automated dispensing system database to maximize customer satisfaction and charge capture.
    • Investigates and resolves billing and ADT rejection notices to promote accurate billing and prevent missing doses.
  • CONTRIBUTES TO THE QUALITY AND EFFECTIVE OPERATION OF THE DEPARTMENT.
    • Reports medication errors identified and enters into the Patient Safety Event reporting system.
    • Responds to customer requests in a timely manner. Answers the telephone according to the Service Excellence Standards. Directs calls to the appropriate staff when necessary.
    • Complies with all federal, state, regulatory agency, Accrediting Organization, standards of practice, and department policy / procedures.
    • Organizes and prioritizes work to ensure pharmacy services are provided in a timely manner according to established timeframes.
    • Provides the pharmacist with a finished product which is accurate and within established timeframes to enable a pharmacist check prior to dispensing.
    • Completes and maintains logs, records, and other required documentation accurately. Files documents in appropriate location.
    • Completes and documents all assigned medication storage inspections per established schedule and timeframe.
    • Is punctual and reports to work as scheduled.
    • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • MAINTAINS COMPETENCE REQUIRED FOR CURRENT JOB TITLE / POSITION.
    • Maintains current Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB).
    • Completes the mandatory hospital competency annually within the expected timeframe.
    • Completes the annual job specific competencies within the expected timeframe.
    • Attends department meetings and/or reviews department meeting minutes.
    • Maintains current State of Illinois Pharmacy Technician licensure annually. Participates in orientation, education, and training programs.

Licensure:
  • Pharmacy Technician

Education/Experience Required:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent. 1 year Pharmacy Tech experience
  • Must either be certified or have 1500 hours of retail Pharmacy Technician experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • Basic personal computer skills. Familiar with basic medical terminology. Good interpersonal skills to deal with a wide variety of individuals. Basic math and problem solving skills. Good communication skills to achieve understanding and acceptance. Ability to work in a team environment. Adaptable to performing multiple tasks. Ability to prioritize orders. Knowledge of pharmacy regulatory standards. Maintenance of a professional appearance.
  • Licensure as a Registered Pharmacy Technician in the State of Illinois. Current Pharmacy Technician Certification (PTCB).

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Ability to perform work accurate with attention to detail within specified time periods. • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize work to complete urgent tasks preferentially. • Ability to work rotating shifts and weekends. Schedule flexibility to meet the needs of the institution, adaptable to changes in workload and/or work schedule. • Ability to effectively communicate with various levels of hospital staff • Ability to travel to various operating units of the hospital. Ability to walk up / down stairs and use the elevators. • Ability to work in a stressful environment • Ability to use hands and fingers repetitively (ie. use of computer keyboard) • Ability to stand, sit, stoop, and kneel • Ability to do medium lifting (20-50 lbs occasionally, 10-25 lbs frequently, & 10 lbs. Consistently) • Ability to perform work & communicate with normal range of hearing and vision • Ability to physically operate the equipment used in the job • Potential for exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapy, cytotoxic drugs, and cleaning solutions). • Potential for stocks or cuts by needles and other sharp items. • Potential for musculoskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not used.
