POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Police Officer Trainee is an entry level Law Enforcement position. Police Officer Trainees will participate in initial departmental training and orientation programs, including attending an accredited Police Academy. The Police Officer Trainee is a non-sworn position designed specifically and solely for the purpose of employing Police Officer candidates in trainee status during the initial basic Police Officer academy training. Incumbents will be afforded the opportunity to be appointed to and sworn in as a probationary entry-level Police Officer with full police authority upon successful and satisfactory completion of academy training.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attend and successfully pass a basic Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) and/or Bureau of Indian Affairs Indian Police Academy training program at the Nevada P.O.S.T. Category I level or equivalent.
  • Participate in initial departmental training and orientation programs, including field training under the direct supervision of sworn FPST PD Officers for the purpose of developing awareness of functions, activities and responsibilities of a policy officer.
  • Participate in physical fitness activities.
  • Establish positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, federal/state/local agencies and associations, Fallon Paiute Shoshone tribe staff and the public.
  • Successfully complete the FPST PD Field Training Program (FTO) upon completion of academy training.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Basic understanding of criminology and the Criminal Justice System.
  • Basic knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations.
  • Basic knowledge of methods and techniques of scheduling work assignments.
  • Basic understanding of office practices and skill to operate office equipment including computers and applicable software.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques for record keeping and report preparation and writing, proper English, spelling, grammar.
  • Successful and satisfactory completion of the Nevada P.O.S.T. basic Academy (Category I); learn laws, police practices, procedures and first aid.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to interpret, explain and apply applicable laws, codes and regulations, read, interpret and record data accurately.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize and follow-up on work assignments, work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to make sound decisions within established guidelines, analyze complex issues and develop and implement an appropriate response.
  • Ability to follow written and oral directions, observe safety practices and work in a safe manner.
  • Mus be able to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to safely and effectively operate a variety of law enforcement equipment such as firearms and police vehicles in emergency situations.
  • Ability to maintain composure in stressful and potentially dangerous situations.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must be 21 years of age at the time of hire.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Nevada driver’s license.
  • Must be insurable under the Tribes vehicle insurance policy, must present a DMV record.
  • Must submit to and pass a thorough background investigation, pre-employment and random drug testing and a thorough medical examination. The background investigation shall include local, state and federal criminal history checks. In addition to meeting Tribal background check requirements, must have no felony convictions, no misdemeanor convictions of Domestic Violence in any court of law and no misdemeanor convictions involving moral turpitude. No DUI convictions in the past five (5) years excluding non-criminal traffic violations.
