Job description

CDFW is looking for a dynamic and self motivated individual to be part of our Pelagic Fisheries monitoring team.
The incumbent will lead our life history program for coastal pelagic species, coordinate aging and maturity methods with federal partners, and will support commercial fishery monitoring and research efforts on coastal pelagic and highly migratory species populations. The incumbent will also perform and direct data entry and database management tasks, and will produce summaries and reports for life history and other data necessary for management and assessment of stocks.
The incumbent will be responsible for providing data summaries, compiling analyses and supporting preparation of analytical documents to inform Pacific Fishery Management Council and Fish and Game Commission regulatory processes critical for managing fished stocks and determining annual catch limits.
The incumbent will also maintain laboratory and field equipment, conduct and plan field surveys, and represent CDFW at outreach events and public meetings.

Working Conditions
Ability to use a computer keyboard several hours a day. Involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods. Attend meetings and hearings, work with staff statewide to complete work assignments. Laboratory work includes the use of microscopes and fume hoods. Field work at fishing localities or processing areas, at-sea / onboard a vessel, aerial surveys. Travel may be required within the state of California via private or public transportation (i.e., automobile, airplane, etc.). Travel may include multiple day overnight stay dependent upon departmental need.

    3. Describe your experience working with stakeholders (e.g., fishermen, environmentalists, general public) while in the field collecting data or while attending meetings. (limit 300 words).

Experience conducting life history and aging analysis on finfish. Skilled use of intermediate and advanced features of Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Power Point, Access, Power BI, or other relational database software) in performance of duties. Experience querying and managing databases. Experience using ESRI or other mapping applications.Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; ability to produce and critically review professional documents including scientific reports, public outreach documents, press releases, and peer reviewed literature. Experience in management, research, planning, or consultation in environmental programs, demonstrated environmental management skills. Ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive and confidential information; facilitate meetings in a manner that ensures the discussion stays focused on the topic and encourages active participation by all attendees; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with management, staff, public entities, and research partners; lead and motivate others in the completion of program and work activities; effectively manage time with multiple assignments and deadlines to ensure timely completion of projects.
Knowledge of: Monitoring and evaluation techniques and principals in fisheries, including aging techniques. Coastal Pelagic and Highly Migratory Species management and life history. State and Federal regulatory processes.
