Summary
The City of Charleston is looking for a Peer Support Specialist to join the Department of Housing and Community Development. Peer Support Specialists are individuals who have been successful in their own substance use recovery and work to help others in their recovery processes.
Examples of Duties
  • Initiate participant assessments of strengths, challenges, resources, and goals (i.e., recovery capital) across multiple life domains.
  • Develop recovery plans to support clients as they transition to the community, based on the wants, needs, and interest of the participants.
  • Identify mechanisms to increase the engagement and support to family members.
  • Contribute effectively as a team member, participating in weekly team meetings, sharing ideas, and communicating with supervisors and other team members.
  • Maintain accurate records as required by agency policies and procedures.
  • Maintain client charts according to quality standards regarding outreach content and timely entry to the Overdose Mapping Application Program (ODMAP) or a Critical Incident Management System (CIMS).
  • Use recovery oriented practices such motivational interviewing.
  • Provide recovery check-ups or other forms of continuing support at least 3 months after transition out of treatment services.
  • Refer clients for screening into Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) services.
  • Provide information on MAT medications and their potential benefits.
  • Working knowledge of and responsibility for service provider partnerships in the area.
  • Compliance with all Charleston Center/Charleston County and City of Charleston Policies and Procedures.
  • Works primarily Monday - Friday 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, and after hours/ flexible coverage on a rotating basis.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

This position is a grant-funded position with an initial funding period of 3 years. This position may or may not continue beyond the 3 year period contingent upon continued funding.
Basic Qualifications
  • Two years of recovery from a substance use disorder and willingness to self-identify as a person in recovery.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Computer proficiency, including recording information in data systems.
  • Must be certified as a Peer Support Specialist through SC Share within 6 months of hire and maintain certification throughout employment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Fluent in Spanish.
  • Related professional experience, including in Trauma Informed Care.
