POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Project Administrator, the Consumer Peer Specialist provides hope and encouragement to participants. The Consumer Peer Specialist will act as a peer mentor and model to Hispanics with behavioral health disorders and at high risk for or living with HIV. to inspire hope, share life experiences and lessons learned as a person in recovery.
DUTIES:
- Assist clients to make healthy decisions that directly affect their own lives; encourage individuals to take responsibility for themselves and others; assure participants that they will be treated with respect and dignity, and foster the understanding that the families are valued and do have skills and strengths.
- Model/mentor recovery process and demonstrate coping skills
- Safe, timely, organized client transport.
- Accompany clients to appropriate community appointments and advocate as needed.
- Communication with coworkers and collaborative staff via phone and email.
- Document all participant contact as required.
- Uphold, understand, and review all policies, procedures as outlined by Employee Handbook
- Engage in, attend, and complete all required supervision, staff meetings, training, in-service, and health regulations deemed necessary by policies and regulations.
- Obtain Certification as a Peer Specialist.
- Other duties as assigned by manager.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Ability to interact effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated computer literacy skills, using MS Office, Google applications and other basic data systems including internet navigation.
- Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
- Self-motivated and able to work independently.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or equivalent.
• In recovery and/or living with HIV\Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
• State of WI Certified Peer Specialist preferred, otherwise must be certified within a year of hire.
• Driver’s license, safe driving record, safe vehicle (smoke-free), and proof of vehicle insurance
• A self-identified current or former user of BHD or HIV services who can relate to others who are now using those services
• Able to work independently and as a member of a team
• Able to work evenings and weekends
• Have good knowledge of city’s public transit system
• Ability to work effectively with diverse populations in a multicultural setting
• Good written and verbal skills
• Good organization skills and ability to meet deadlines
• Attention to detail
WORK CONDITIONS
Work hours: Departmental business hours with the possibility of evenings and weekends as necessary.
