Job Description
Under the direct supervision of the breastfeeding coordinator, provides support and encouragement for prenatal and breastfeeding women enrolled in the WIC Program.
1. Interface with participants in a professional manner at all times.
2. Assists in breastfeeding classes.
3. Identifies moms needing referral to the breastfeeding coordinator,
4. Maintains accurate records of contacts with mothers.
5. Communicates with mothers and prenatal in the waiting room before contact with dietitians.
6. Provides emotional support to mothers and prenatal to encourage breastfeeding.
7. Attends all training sessions.
8. Demonstrates proper breastfeeding positions for mother and baby; manual expression of breast milk and safe collection and storage of breast milk and increasing and decreasing milk supply.
9. Acts as advocate for breastfeeding in the community.
10. Communicates with moms via the telephone as a follow-up service.
11. Contacts participants who received a breast pump within 24 hours of issuance.
12. Cleans hospital grade (loaner pumps) using clean wipes upon return. Performs these and other WIC related duties, as assigned by the breastfeeding coordinator.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Satisfactory and documented completion of a formalized Peer Counselor/Specialist Training Program or one (1) year of full-time satisfactory experience working with consumers of mental health services as a Peer Counselor/specialist, peer advocate or in related human services; and
2. A High school diploma or its educational equivalent.
