Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
A paraprofessional support person who gives basic breastfeeding information and encouragement to WIC pregnant and breastfeeding mothers. Assists with prenatal and breastfeeding groups and interacts with WIC staff to promote and support breastfeeding.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Attends breastfeeding training classes to become Peer Counselor.
- Receives Peer Counselor referrals and makes routine periodic contacts with assigned WIC prenatal or postpartum women.
- Provide breastfeeding counseling to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone and at WIC or clinic visit at intervals outlines in Peer Counselor handbook.
- Assists in-groups for pregnant or breastfeeding women as well as conduct breastfeeding workshops.
- Available outside the usual 8-5 working schedule.
- Keep mothers' information strictly confidential.
- Keep accurate records of all contact made.
- Attends monthly meetings and breastfeeding conferences/workshops as assigned by the breastfeeding coordinator.
- Attends in-service and other agency meetings.
Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED.
- Has previous breastfeeding experience.
- Successfully completes the Peer Counselor Training Program through the local agency.
- is a current or former WIC participant or is from the community served by the local agency.
- exhibits good nurturing skills.
- has consistent reliable access to a phone.
- has access to transportation to keep program commitment.
- projects enthusiasm for assisting other women.
