Payroll Analyst

As a core member of the Human Resources (HR) Operational Services in Payroll, you will deliver HR service assistance to the HR community, business managers and employees. You will process complex and escalated HR requests related to multiple service lines for an assigned group of employees. In this role, you will demonstrates in depth knowledge in regard to US/Puerto Rico (PR) payroll laws and regulations and is responsible for monitoring payroll activities internally and externally. You will collectively collaborate with various teams to proactively monitor internal controls while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely payroll processing. This role will need to be able to work a hybrid in-person schedule out of the Cary, NC office.

Your responsibilities

  • Supports business process strategies for Employee Life Cycle to achieve efficiency, productivity, and improved control
  • Assists with implementation of key strategies and projects
  • Processes end-to-end payroll activities, including off-cycle payrolls and retro events. Ensures that all employee earnings and deductions are accurate and in compliance with payroll wage and tax legal requirements and ABB internal compensation policies
  • Performs reconciliations, audits, and internal control documentations

  • Completes Gross to Net calculations, provides communication, and processes recovery activities for overpayment process
  • Administers garnishments and partners with 3rd party vendor (ADP) to ensure garnishments are processed accurately and timely
  • Ensures compliance with ABB policies, regulations, wage and tax laws, segregation of duties, SOX and other federal and state legislation impacting payroll
  • Maintains Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and recommends process improvements
  • Provides ad-hoc payroll reports to support management and business needs
  • Acts as a subject matter expert for researching, troubleshooting and resolving payroll integration and production issues, applying leading practices and ensuring long-standing solutions
  • Responsible for 100% compliance with the internal controls
  • Assists with Year-End payroll processing activities and other payroll impacting projects
  • Facilitates a respectful work environment
  • Performs other related duties as required and assigned
  • Resolves ServiceNow cases in accordance with the Key Performance Indicators, while also providing exceptional customer service
  • Build strong working relationships with various cross-functional groups throughout Human Resources to deliver exceptional customer service experience by responding accurately and timely to customer requests
  • Provide feedback to customer facing teams and equip them with knowledge to respond to customer requests
  • Create awareness and guide employees (as applicable) on Self service functions
  • Submits change or enhancement requests when necessary, such as new wage types and compliance updates
  • Provides recommendations for compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) requirements. Confirms that all controls are functioning as designed and proactively identifies areas for improvement in internal controls
  • Includes testing of segregation of duties (SOD), testing of payroll service’s controls and identifies “gaps”, as well as participating in annual SOX testing and validation exercises
  • Identify and implement improvement ideas by challenging the status-quo (especially processes that are manual/repetitive)

Your background

  • Relevant Bachelor's degree with two years of payroll experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education
  • Knowledge of payroll methods, touch points, end-to-end processing steps, and best practices; up-to-date knowledge of federal, state, and local FLSA laws
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Excel and other MS Office applications
  • Experience with SAAS Systems
  • CPP certification, Workday or SAP payroll module experience and ADP experience preferred
  • Hands-on experience with multi-state and multi-company payroll
  • Organized and focused to drive meaningful results, process improvements, manage complexity, and meet operational deadlines
  • Knowledge of integrated, cross-functional business systems
  • Critical thinking skills to investigate and resolve issues
  • Able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and adapt well to changing priorities to meet deadlines
  • Ability to work in a flexible environment where requirements and procedures continuously evolve
  • Highly ethical, analytical, team-oriented, flexible, inquisitive & logical
  • Must maintain confidential information discreetly and protect employee privacy
