The University of Southern Maine’s Department of Linguistics is seeking applicants for the position of part-time instructor to teach linguistics, language, and interpreting courses. The languages we offer regularly are Arabic, American Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Latin, Spanish, and Wabanaki languages. We occasionally offer other languages. We also offer courses in general linguistics, speech and language science, ASL/English interpreting, and Deaf culture.

The Department of Linguistics is an undergraduate program within the College of Science, Technology and Health. Linguistics students can major in general linguistics or in a number of concentrations. We also offer several minors.

We are seeking student-focused instructors who will have full responsibility for course delivery and grading.

Part-time faculty members are paid on a credit hour basis based on prior teaching experience. In addition, USM employees can use their USM Card to access the library, Cigna Employee Assistance Plan, and fitness center(s). USM also offers part-time faculty the opportunity for development frequently through our Center for Collaboration and Development (CCD) and the chance to get an online teaching certification and training through CTEL, in addition to other developmental opportunities open to all staff throughout the year.

Qualifications:

Qualifications differ depending on the area. They are:

General linguistics: Master’s degree in Linguistics or Ph.D. in Linguistics.

Speech/language pathology foundation courses: Master’s degree or doctorate in Speech/Language Pathology or Audiology.

Interpreting: RID-recognized certification (CDI, RSC, CSC, CI/CT, NIC IV-V) or equivalent (e.g., BEI-Master). EIPA assessment if teaching education-related courses. SC:L if teaching legal interpreting courses. QMHI or MSW if teaching Mental Health courses. CoreCHI, CHI, or CMI plus generalist certification if teaching medical courses. Evidence of mentoring experience and familiarity with the Integrated Model of Interpreting.

ASL: Native to near-native signing ability, ASLPI 4-5, possession of ASLTA or willingness to work toward ASLTA certification, and B.A. or more advanced degree (except as supervised co-instructors). Additional Qualifications for teaching online courses: Training on online delivery of ASL (beyond quick training to handle COVID situations), experience teaching ASL online.

Spoken languages at the 100-level, 200-level, and 300: Native or near-native fluency in the language and Master’s degree in a discipline related to the language (except as supervised co-instructors in a local community language).

FRENCH/SPANISH 301, 302: Master's or Ph.D. in a discipline related to the language, graduate coursework in linguistics, fluency in French/Spanish, and experience teaching in the language at the undergraduate level.

FRENCH/SPANISH 416: Master’s or Ph.D. in Linguistics, research or course work in French/Spanish linguistics, fluency in French/Spanish, ability to teach linguistics in French/Spanish, and experience teaching linguistics courses at the undergraduate level.

If you are applying to teach ASL or interpreting, at least one of the three recommenders should be a Deaf signer of ASL.
