Essential Job Functions/Duties/Responsibilities
Bus drivers operate various types of buses to transport Sterling students between locations. The employee drives a school bus transporting passengers over specific routes according to the designated schedules while performing the tasks listed below and in accordance with the Board of Education policies. Bus drivers are employed during the school year but may take on additional duties when off duty.
This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the employee. The employee will be required to follow any other instructions and to perform any other duties requested by their supervisor.
The duties and responsibilities of the Bus Driver will include:
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspection daily (in accordance with the Connecticut Motor Vehicle Regulations) and report any malfunction to the supervisor
  • Drive safely, abide by local and State motor vehicle laws and regulations, in addition abide by the Town or Board of Education bylaws, contract, policies and regulations
  • Stop at all pre-designated bus stops, activate the proper warning lights, ensure that students are safely seated (or safely off and away from the bus) and then proceed to the next stop
  • Follow precise schedules; adjusting driving according to the weather and driving conditions, in order to arrive at each stop at the designated time
  • Maintain appropriate behavior by the students on the bus and enforce the school bus safety rules by ensuring that students remain in their seats, do not harm themselves or others, do not eat or drink on the bus, and are respectful of both people and property
  • Report any accidents or incidents involving the school bus and/or the children on the bus immediately to the Transportation Director and submit a written report of the accident or incident on the day of the occurrence
  • Communicate appropriately with adults and students
  • Report immediately to the Transportation Director any complaints made by students, parents and teachers
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment by performing daily sweeping of the bus, cleaning of the dashboard, removal of trash and collecting lost items
  • Attend recertification and safety classes on a regular basis as required
  • Maintain current license and D.O.T. physical examinations and arrange to complete the proper forms and examinations in order to keep licenses and examinations current and valid
  • Properly fill out all required paperwork and reports, turn in all paperwork in a timely manner. The required paperwork will include but is not limited to mileage sheets, trip sheets, accident reports, discipline reports, and time cards

Work Experience Requirements:
The prospective driver must meet State and Federal regulations and possess a Connecticut Commercial Driver's License Class B with passenger and school bus endorsement. The applicant must have the ability to drive any student transportation vehicle owned and operated by the Town of Sterling. Drivers must be at least 21 years of age and have no criminal or unsafe driving record. Drivers must possess a valid driver's license. No prior Bus Driver experience is required as the Board provides the training.
Education Requirements:
  • Candidates must possess either a high school diploma or have earned a GED

Ability Requirements:
In order to be considered for a Bus Driver position, the applicant must pass a physical examination, a background check and a drug test. The physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by the employee. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use their hands and feet, talk, see and hear. The employee is required to reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop or kneel. Some of the required tasks include the ability to:
(Physical)
  • Open and close school bus doors; which operate with 10 to 14 pounds of force on a level surface
  • Lift the hood of the bus and check the following: oil, coolant level in the radiator, power steering fluid, hydraulic reservoir, windshield washer fluid, condition of hoses, belts and wiring to check for leaks and/or weaknesses in the system
  • Operate hand and foot controls on the bus
  • Open emergency doors and all emergency exits on the bus
  • Operate wheelchair lifts and secure all tie downs in the bus as required by DMV regulations
  • Handle wheel chocks weighing 8 pounds each
  • Bend to look under the bus during pre-trip and post-trip inspections
  • Sweep the bus, pick up and remove garbage cans and clean windows
  • Communicate with students and give instructions in case of an emergency
  • Aid in the removal of any passenger on the bus in the event of an emergency
  • Lift 40 pounds (approximate weight of a small child)

In addition to the physical demands described previously, the employee is regularly required to work in confined spaces: floor to ceiling is approximately 74 inches; seat to ceiling is approximately 58 inches; seat to seat is approximately 27.5 inches; floor to seat is approximately 11.5 inches.
Communication:
  • Communicate effectively to adults and children
  • Properly complete all required paperwork and district reports
  • Accurately maintain passenger logs and reporting data sheets
  • Accurately tell and record time
