This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, Michigan on a full-time basis.

The Role

This Engineering position will bring insights on scoping, setting up equipment and developing process parameters for packaging cell stacks into prismatic cans at the Wallace Battery Innovation Center. This position will be responsible for evaluating electrode and cell components, verifying design specifications by ensuring compatibility between the bill of materials and the bill of design, integration development, and evaluating cell level performance is required to finalize cell specification and troubleshooting.

What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Point of contact of all cell packaging activities
  • Responsible for planning and coordinating availability of technical details to generate design drawings, working with suppliers, the Advanced Cell design team and the designers
  • Responsible for ensuring compatibility across the Bill of Materials, the cell design and packaging process limitations, working with the cell components team and the cell development engineers
  • Coordinate verification of the component properties against the COA
  • Collaborate with the material engineering and analytical teams to document the incoming and in-process part quality
  • Support troubleshooting of integration issues, especially across interfaces, choice of electrolytes, fill procedure, formation conditions and implications for cell performance, using both onsite/in-situ analysis and by coordinating offsite/ex-situ analysis
  • Provide cell and component level characterization expertise/problem solving related to the developed and integrated product
  • Performs critical interpretation of analytical data related to cell component integration and analyzes information to drive mechanistic understanding and electrochemical behavior
  • Ensure data analysis consistency and identify needed measure to feed into standard work, CTSs, and specifications across multiple parallel workstreams
  • Communicate new concepts and draw insight from discussions with coworkers
  • Assist the team toward solutions, clear roadblocks, and ensure streamlined by designing and executing materials and electrochemical characterization experiments to study factors that influence the degradation of battery components under different testing conditions
  • Implement a systematic investigation approach for identifying the root causes of failures and develop recommendations for corrective action

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • MS in chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, engineering or related fields
  • 5+ years of industrial/academic experience related to Li-ion battery analysis
  • Experience in electrochemistry, specifically on lithium-ion batteries and related material and electrode characterization
  • Ability to analyze data and draw deeper conclusions from analytical data to drive faster turnaround times
  • Demonstrable track record of learning new technologies and utilizing these skillsets to have a tangible impact in a short time frame
  • Ability to onboard and integrate existing in-house knowledge with new discoveries and challenges being tackled in developing high-energy cells
  • Ability to identify and execute testing metrics to shorten the cycle of learning
  • Experience working with moisture sensitive materials in a glovebox or dry room

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Extensive work with individual cell components (electrodes, separator, foils, electrolyte, etc.) and hands-on experience with cell-build operations such as electrode-stack packaging
  • Familiarity with automated cell-assembly, and working knowledge and/or expertise in large format cell integration
