Job description

The Park Ranger is responsible making scheduled rounds at all Parks and Recreation Department parks facilities to provide compliance with general park rules and City ordinances.
NOTE: The duties of this position will include all of those duties set forth in the official job description.
The City offers a wide variety of benefits to employees. Additionally, this job classification is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Fort Lauderdale and Teamsters Local Union 769.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Essential functions are the basic job duties that an employee must be able to perform, with or without reasonable accommodation. The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification.   • Makes scheduled rounds at assigned City parks in order to provide surveillance and identify individuals circumventing the entrance fee or trespassing after closing hours and to discover emergency situations involving injury, illness, fire, water or other causes
  • Determines and encourages compliance with park rules and City ordinances and when necessary notifies proper authorities of violations and assists such authorities to the extent permitted
  • Enforces rules and regulations to safeguard City parks
  • Controls vehicular and pedestrian traffic during special events, and emergency situations
  • Documents irregularities; generates reports and provides general information on park operations and areas of control; notifies appropriate Police Department Personnel of activities requiring law enforcement intervention
  • Performs light maintenance duties and may clear paved areas of debris, branches and other obstructions or requests assistance.
  • Investigates complaints
  • Operates motor vehicles, two-way radios and other equipment
  • Completes equipment preventative maintenance requirements, troubleshoots malfunctions, requests equipment and site repairs; and reviews completed repairs
  • Conducts tours and educational programs and explains location facets and features
  • Performs minor first aid duties and follows through with proper emergency procedures in the event of more serious incidents
  • May issue citations for parking, littering, and minor violations
  • Performs related work as required

JOB REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalency
  • One (1) year security and/or law enforcement experience, preferably in a park setting. Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job related field, may substitute on a year-for-year basis for one year of the required education.
  • Possess or be able to obtain a Florida Driver's License
  • Candidates will be required to pass a background investigation which includes a polygraph examination prior to employment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Essential Employees may be required to work during a declared emergency. The employee's Department Head will determine who will be required to work.
PHYSICAL STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The position involves medium physical demands, such as exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.
