About the job:
Park Maintenance Worker 2 will work in the Sports and parks division of the Landscape department. Looking for a person with well-rounded skills in a variety of landscape related practices. For example: turf care, pesticide and fertilizer applications, equipment operations, plant care, irrigation and garbage removal. Will also help lead a crew of seasonal staff during the season.
A day in the life:
- Leads the work of employees, including training in safe operation of tools and equipment, and providing feedback to employees; participates in work of crews; provides guidance and training in procedures and techniques as needed to ensure quality and quantity of work meets standards.
- Preps athletic fields for practice and and competitive game play, including dragging infields, layout and marking athletic fields.
- Coordinates and provides direction on projects and/or programs; assigns work, identifies costs, adheres to project budget; and ensures equipment and supplies are available.
- Coordinates with contractors and acts as a resource in the field. May provide instruction and site-specific details to reduce conflicts and to ensure a safe working environment.
- Maintains the irrigation system of assigned areas to include troubleshooting, designing, laying-out, installing, programming, repairing and winterizing irrigation systems.
- Purchases materials and supplies; reconciles purchasing statement.
- Reviews and provides input on park and facility designs and development projects; reads and interprets construction drawings and blueprints.
- Assists the Supervisor in reviewing, providing input, and making recommendations on design of parks and facilities and development projects, providing input on staff performance, calculating costs and square footage, entering data into the maintenance management system, and electronic filing system.
- Performs Park Maintenance 1 duties: maintains park landscape and natural areas, grounds and trails; applies pesticides, performs snow removal and ice control duties; assists in park renovation projects in such areas as carpentry, painting, concrete work, and excavation; assists with set-up, operation, and break-down of special events; maintains equipment in clean and safe condition; operates equipment safely at all times.
- Promotes safe conditions in all park facilities.
What you'll need for success:
Strong Knowledge of:
- Principles, practices and methods used in horticulture, arbor culture, noxious weed control,
- Park Maintenance repair, forestry, trail construction and resource management.
- Maintenance and safe operation of powered equipment and hand tools.
- Effective employee training techniques; general knowledge of effective supervisory practices.
- Basic computer programs and data entry; and
- Basic arithmetic, spelling, English and grammar.
Skill and Ability to:
- Effectively communicate with others verbally and in writing, including by phone, e-mail or in person;
- Work independently while also able to work cooperatively with others;
- Safely operate equipment, mowers, tractors, hand and power tools;
- Effectively understand and follow oral and written instructions;

What We're Looking For:
Education, Experience, and Training:
- High School diploma or equivalent; AND
- Three (3) years of experience in Park Maintenance, horticulture and landscaping, natural resources, forest management, irrigation technology, or construction; OR
- Any satisfactory combination of education, experience and training.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Possession of, or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire, a valid Oregon driver’s license
- Some positions may require possession of, or ability to obtain within one year of hire, a valid Public Pesticide Applicator’s license.
- Some positions may require chainsaw certification.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The following are working conditions, including environmental and physical demands, required for this classification.
- Duties are performed indoors and outdoors with exposure to inclement weather including heat, cold, humidity, wind, snow, and rain.
- Exposure to various hazardous chemical, fumes, and high noise levels.
- Daily standing and walking over uneven terrain, such as parks and trails with up/down inclines, paved and unpaved surfaces for sustained periods of time.
- Safety equipment, including shoes, gloves, reflective vests and eye protection are required.
- Daily operation of a motor vehicle on public roadways.

- Making substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers, and constant use of hands and arms and may require overhead reaching.
- Occasional lifting, moving, dragging, pushing and carrying of heavy objects (up to 50 pounds unassisted).
- Occasional crouching, crawling, bending, kneeling, climbing or balancing.
- May require working for emergency call-outs or snow removal during off duty hours including some holidays.
