Job description

The incumbent responds to emergency and non-emergency situations and conducts patient care to include Advanced Life Support. May be assigned to an ambulance or fire engine. Conducts technical functions related to fire protection and suppression of all fires, rescue, EMS, and Hazmat, including responding to emergency situations. Performs daily inspections of all equipment, apparatus, and firehouses to insure mission readiness.
GENERAL PURPOSE:
Paramedic Firefighter Recruit
The purpose of this position is developing a trained Paramedic to learn the Firefighter job: to provide fire protection and suppression, hazmat, rescue services and EMS services to people and animals, and serve the public in those capacities.

  • Maintains and supports a positive, collaborative culture within the City organization as a whole, fully embracing the cultural and values statements espoused by the City.
  • Responds to all fire/rescue (animal and people), hazmat or medical calls and emergencies and provides care, direction, or support as necessary in the particular area as dictated by his/her shift job; may be the sole respondent in some cases and may be required to coordinate volunteers or other agencies/departments at sites; responds and mitigates non-emergency situations.
  • Conducts basic maintenance on vehicles and equipment ensuring access via communications equipment and responsive/readiness of emergency vehicles; ensures all medical supplies are stocked and ready on the assigned vehicle.
  • Conducts maintenance of fire facilities, including custodial duties such as cleaning, repairing and related tasks.
  • Attends and provides formal recruit training on fire department EMS issues, procedures, and programs for volunteer staff.
  • May oversee EMS functions for the City, including responding to calls and assisting with developing and implementing procedures.
  • Conducts all the duties of and responsibilities of a Paramedic and may act as the Supervisor at the firehouse or on scenes.
  • May attend administrative meetings and serve as departmental representatives as requested.
  • Requests the purchase of medical supplies and equipment within departmental guidelines.
  • Required to work 48-hour shifts at fire stations on a fire engine or on ambulance crew.
  • Conducts patient care, identifies diagnostic signs and symptoms, may seek technical guidance of an emergency room physician prior to rendering treatment, and administers emergency care as determined necessary.
  • Attends annual trainings to ensure all required certifications are current and maintained. Loss of required certifications may result in termination.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with citizens and co-workers.

Additional duties of a Paramedic Firefighter
  • Assists in fire prevention activities, including performing facility inspections, providing educational materials or programs for citizens, businesses, schools, day care facilities and organized groups.
  • Attends administrative meeting and departmental representatives as requested.
  • Completes reports of emergency medical responses and patient care.
  • Requests the purchase of medical supplies and equipment within departmental guidelines.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILTIES:
  • Answers telephone and responds to citizen questions and provides information, as necessary.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as requested by superior.

Education and Experience:

Requires High School graduation or GED equivalent supplemented by specialized courses/training equivalent to completion of one (1) year of college in emergency medical services or closely related field.

At least one (1) year of experience as an EMT-Paramedic or closely related experience preferred.

Certificate or licenses:

  • Requires a valid Colorado Driver's License
  • Requires Colorado State or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic certification.
    • NREMT - 90-day provisional license allows the incumbent to operate as a paramedic until a Colorado State Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic has been issued.
  • Requires American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • Requires attaining IFSAC/Pro-Board Firefighter I certification within one (1) year of employment.
  • Requires attaining IFSAC/Pro-Board Firefighter II certification within 18 months of employment.
  • Requires attaining IFSAC-Pro-Board Driver Operator certification within one (1) year of employment.
  • Requires attaining Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations certification within one (1) year of employment.
  • Requires attaining NWCG S130/190 within one (1) year of employment.
  • Ability to obtain the following ICS Certifications: IS100, 200 & 700 within one (1) year.

Additional education and experience for Paramedic Firefighter
  • Requires IFSAC/Pro-Board Firefighter I certification or higher.
  • Requires attaining IFSAC/Pro-Board Firefighter II certification within one (1) year of employment.
  • Requires IFSAC/Pro-Board Hazardous Materials Awareness/Operations certification or higher.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:

Handles or uses computers, tools, equipment, or work aids involving moderate latitude for judgment regarding attainment of a standard or in selecting appropriate items.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all the time and involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or considerable skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs in tasks involving close tolerances or limits of accuracy.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

While the majority of this position's duties are performed inside, the incumbent will frequently spend time in the out-of-doors environment, in other premises, and/or in a vehicle responding to emergencies.


Incumbent spends a limited amount of time annually underground. This position may be subjected to situations of extreme heat or cold, and/or wet/humid conditions with or without temperature change on a substantial basis, annually.

Incumbent may encounter loud and/or irritating noises such as engines and generators and equipment vibration on a limited basis. May be exposed to fumes, odors, dusts, mists, and gases under poorly ventilated conditions on a limited basis.

Limited to moderate exposure to working at heights, burns, radiant energy, explosives, and electrical and mechanical hazards. Moderate to high exposure to toxic, caustic chemicals, stress, blood-borne pathogens, and motor vehicle traffic hazards associated with emergency situations.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to operate an automobile and emergency vehicles.
  • Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull a burden of up to 75 pounds on a moderate daily basis.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring limited to substantial climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, bending, crawling, twisting, and reaching on a limited to moderate basis.
  • Ability to work with hands above shoulder height or with arms extended at shoulder height with up to 10 pounds.
  • Ability to hear wide ranges of noises, to distinguish what noise is and where noise came from. Ability to distinguish cries for help or potentially dangerous noises versus non-threatening noises. Ability to hear radio signals and equipment and emergency alarms.
  • Ability to see small objects at a distance. Ability to identify objects in low light or bright light. Ability to see and distinguish close objects, such as in reading blueprints. Ability to distinguish depth, color and see movement in a wide field of vision.
  • Ability to communicate with citizens daily.
  • Ability to understand verbal information and instructions. Ability to exchange information with others and to justify and present recommendations.
  • Ability to read and understand written materials.
  • Ability to translate verbal communication into effective written material, e.g., reports and other documents.
  • Ability to memorize codes, details, laws, regulations, processes, policies, and the like are essential for responding to emergency situations and life-threatening circumstances.
  • Ability to use mathematical reasoning is necessary for accurate emergency medical treatment, developing fire extinguishing methods, and preparing plans, budgets, and reports.
  • Ability to think quickly and analyze situations under pressure is essential for determining such things as patient care needs and fire-retardant methods/approaches in emergency situations.
  • Ability to communicate with others under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to remain calm in emotionally charged situations.
  • Ability to solve problems is essential in both emergency situations as well as in responding to general personnel policy and procedural requirements.

Communication Requirements

Reads journals, manuals, and professional publications; speaks informally to groups of co-workers, staff in other organizational agencies, general public, and people in other organizations and presents training; composes original reports, training and other written materials, using proper language, punctuation, grammar and style.

Judgment Requirements

Responsible for the actions of others, requiring development of procedures and constant decisions affecting subordinate workers, crime victims, patients, customers, clients or others in the general public; works in a very fluid environment with guidelines, but significant variation.

Complexity of Work

Performs coordinating work involving guidelines and rules, with constant problem solving; requires continuous, close attention for accurate results or frequent exposure to unusual pressures.
