The division provides legal advice and representation across a variety of specialized areas related to UW's broad array of operations and activities, including healthcare, employment law, labor relations, student affairs, admissions, real estate, compliance and risk services, ADA, Title IX, business law, intercollegiate athletics, public finance, bonds, intellectual property, tax, benefits, IT, gifts and trusts, and constitutional law.The Attorney Generals Office has an outstanding opportunity for a Paralegal 2. This position is a UW position and the successful candidate will be a UW employee, working on an integrated team of UW and AGO-employed attorneys and staff.This position reports to the Paralegal 3. The primary purpose of this position is to apply specialized knowledge of legal proceedings, issues and information resources to provide substantive support to the UW Division of the Attorney General's Office.
This includes providing a wide variety of legal support to attorneys and working both collaboratively and independently to assist in the Division's legal services. The work will include litigation support, including for labor matters, subpoena responses, public record reviews, legal research, contract review, assignment to the Division's Healthcare Team leader and other assorted projects as assigned.Paralegal DutiesPerform complex paralegal support activities under the supervision of attorneys.Review and redact documents responsive to public records requests in Everlaw.Work with attorneys to assist UW in responding to subpoenas, including communicating with UW staff to obtain responsive documents, communicating with counsel who issued the subpoena, and reviewing, redacting, and producing documents.Calendar litigation critical events/dates and monitor cases to ensure no critical deadlines are missed. Work with attorneys and legal assistants to identify next steps in litigation and/or adjudicatory processes.Review litigation and subpoena files and critically analyze and summarize complex legal and factual issues, questions, and strategies.Contact client representatives, if necessary, to clarify issues or obtain additional information.
Conduct discovery to gather relevant information and documents.Correspond with others, including potential witnesses and outside counsel. Prepare written analyses of complex legal issues including facts, policies, , jurisdiction, remedies sought, potential witnesses, etc. Review and analyze additional evidence provided by opposing parties.Interpret and explain complex court rules, policies, and operating procedures.Navigate federal and state court sites to search for case dockets and retrieve copies of court pleadings.Assist with reviewing case citations.Help draft letters, pleadings, and other documents including, but not limited to, affidavits, motions, memoranda, and contracts.Conduct legal and other technical research utilizing Westlaw, library resources, and the internet.Assist attorneys in preparing for, and taking part in, meetings, hearings, etc.Within established guidelines, respond to requests for information and for copies of documents, statutes, and cases, and answer general questions regarding legal matters and status of cases.Field incoming calls and provide assistance to clients, outside counsel, etc.
