Job description

Description

Onsite. This position requires an employee to be on-site on a full-time basis.

Role

In our pursuit to create a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion, GM’s Global Manufacturing Engineering team is challenging the limits on what is possible and embracing agility as it reimagines how to build the next generation of vehicles. Our diverse team of Manufacturing Engineers play a crucial role in transforming our facilities through implementing the adoption of ground-breaking technologies. From raw sheet metal to final assembly, this team is reinventing the tools and processes that will enable GM to deliver on our promise to create an all-electric future.

The position will be based at the Factory Zero Assembly Plant in the Paint Shop. However, at times you will be asked to support projects across town in the Lansing Delta Township Assembly Plant Paint Shop. You must have some Project Management experience with emphasis on projects that are large in scope and involve the installation of paint automation or paint systems. You must be able to manage several projects simultaneously.

In this role your responsibilities will be of a technical nature with decisions made within the limits of general practices, policies and standards. Your work will involve complex manufacturing problems including the need to root cause and follow issues to resolve.

You will be responsible for equipment related to the paint manufacturing process. You will required to use your independent discernment.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

  • As a Paint Shop Resident Engineer, you will manage and execute projects for the Body ME Paint Group. You will be responsible for the design, build and installation of state-of-the-art paint systems.  You will work with construction contractors that will install our equipment and tooling. You will also be responsible for the refurbishment and upgrade of existing equipment.

  • Your work will involve developing project concepts and contracting professional services for engineering (when it is necessary). You will be identifying long lead items for purchase such as robots, equipment, facilities, etc. You will purchase Machinery and Equipment (M&E) for the Paint Shop. You will develop bid specifications, scopes of work and project schedules. You will utilize the GM Purchasing Bid & Award Process to source purchase orders and will conduct technical bid reviews. You will write and submit purchase requisitions.

  • Once the Purchase Order is issued you will meet with the manufacturers and monitor the engineering and fabrication. You will control design changes utilizing the field order process to document changes in scope. Once on site, you will monitor the installation, schedule and progress. You will integrate the Machinery and Equipment (M&E) into the Paint Shop.  You will oversee the start-up and debug of the systems including integrating and getting the plants involvement. Finally, you will coordinate and support the functional and safety buy-offs (red, yellow and green tag).

  • Additional non-project related task will include providing a report out once a month at the Paint 4-Walls Meeting, completing the annual color trials for new color introduction and the Paint Shop Durability Audits (2 times per year).

  • You will be the primary contact between the plant and Vehicle Systems. At times you will be asked to provide timely information on equipment failures, breakdowns and lost production at your plant. Also, you may be asked to collect data and information to support surveys and studies.

  • The position offers the independent self-starters the opportunity to manage their own projects. You are not tied to production so you can make your own work schedule. There will be times when you will have to work a plant shutdown and come in on weekends but that is generally infrequent.

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Engineering degree or equivalent plant/paint experience.

  • 5+ years’ experience specifying, commissioning or operating Paint Shop equipment and systems.

  • You must have a fundamental understanding of the major paint processes (phosphate, elpo, ovens, air houses, paint mix, sludge, sealing, primer and topcoat) and the ability to learn on your own the minor processes.

  • You must demonstrate an ability to work independently and with others as part of a team. Your ability to work effectively with people at all educational and experience levels is required.

  • You must demonstrate solid organization, planning and problem-solving skills.

  • You must be willing to work effectively in a manufacturing plant environment. You must demonstrate some level of leadership experience.
