Optical Engineer I

Position Overview:

Astound Broadband is currently searching for an Optical Engineer I in our Concord, CA office. This is a hybrid position with some travel as requested. This position is responsible for capacity planning, network design, network device maintenance and implementation, as well as serving as an escalation point for network events. Your skills will be called to review and create test scenarios prior to implementing changes to the network. You will act as an escalation point for network issues, combining superior troubleshooting, communication, and network management skills, to expedite problem resolution and act as a key point of contact between internal groups, vendors, and network peers. You will learn quickly and adapt to changes. You will maintain a high sense of urgency while staying cool under pressure.

The primary position responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

• Managing core network capacity in co-operation with Engineering and internal customers
• Design/ QC core network solution in cooperation with Engineering Architecture
• Handle escalated trouble calls and work closely with the NOC, engineering, field technicians, and telecommunications carriers to resolve service issues
• Act as an externally facing point of contact to facilitate handling of problem reports and maintain relations with customers, network peers and vendors
• Act as an internally facing point of contact to escalate technical issues and communicate network status. Oversee and execute planned network maintenance work, minimizing impact to services
• Assist IP Engineering with the deployments of core border and aggregation router configurations and switches
• Manage and implement optical DWDM network components using NMS and devices specific interfaces (CLI/GUI.)
• Provisioning of complex customer services in accordance with product catalog and service orders
• Work with Sales Engineering to design implementation solutions for customer requirements
• Take directions and execute as needed
• Occasional out of state travel may be requested
• Other duties as assigned

Our ideal candidate will possess:

• DWDM & optical transport and transceiver knowledge
• Specifying ADVA and Ciena platforms
• 5+ years of experience with an Internet service provider or enterprise-level network engineering
• Ability to read and understand designs
• System engineering, test and link analysis skills with vendor-specific tools (OSA, OTDR, Bert- 10/100g, Power meter.)
• Knowledge of industry standards, fiber/fiber management, electronics, AC-DC Wiring
• Ability to use Visio, Excel, Power point, MS-Office
• Experience with as-built documentation
• Meticulous and detail oriented, works well with minimal supervision, ability to troubleshoot problems under pressure and provide analysis to senior management. Ability to train and mentor lower tier technicians
• Work with vendors for quotes, service restoration and equipment returns
• Work well with minimal supervision
• Ability to drive company vehicle
• Must possess valid driving license with a satisfactory driving record
• Ability to travel as requested

Education

Required:

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Bachelor's Degree in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience

Base Salary:The base salary for this position is $105,000 - $115,000 plus opportunities for bonus and benefits, if applicable. The base pay range represents the low and high end of the hiring range for this job. Actual pay will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to relevant skills, experience, and capabilities.
