Description of duties - This OPS position serves as a Biological Scientist II for the Wildlife and Environmental Areas (WEAs) in the North District of the North Central Region. This position is under the supervision of the Lead Area Biologist for Branan Field, Bell Ridge Longleaf, Fort White, Lafayette Forest, and Suwannee Ridge WEAs. The individual in this position also assists with habitat and land management efforts and wildlife survey activities on additional public lands in the district that have been established as wildlife management areas (WMAs).
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Performing habitat restoration using prescribed fire, planting of native vegetation, and other techniques.
- Performing wildlife surveys for multiple species.
- Surveying and treating exotic vegetation using herbicides and other methods.
- Monitoring archeological resources.
- Operating tractors, dozers, and other equipment.
- Maintaining roads, equipment, and office building.
- Accurately and routinely submitting reports of activities and accomplishments using online databases and ArcGIS.
- Providing technical assistance to other biologists.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities -
- Knowledge and experience in conducting wildlife surveys, including game and nongame species, analyzing data, and summarizing results.
- Applied knowledge of the application of prescribed fire.
- Applied knowledge of chemical or mechanical control of invasive vegetation.
- Knowledge of ArcGIS and GPS and their application.
- Ability to operate and maintain 4WD vehicles, tractors, farm implements, ATVs, and outboard motors.
- Ability to work independently and in a variety of weather conditions.
- Ability to work efficiently in a team of diverse people with differing backgrounds.
- Ability to plan and prioritize multiple work assignments.
- Ability to communicate effectively with external and internal customers.
- Skill in use of Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, etc.)

Level of Education - Prefer Bachelor of Science degree with a major in one of the biological sciences, or a Master of Science degree in one of the biological sciences or four years of directly related professional experience can substitute for the required Bachelor of Science degree.
